Obama's Hawaii vacation: Day 2

KAILUA, Hawaii (AP) ? How President Barack Obama spent the second day of his holiday vacation in Hawaii on Thursday:

? GYM: Obama had a morning workout at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, keeping with his routine.

? BOWLING: Obama returned to the base with his daughters Sasha and Malia for a bowling outing. The White House declined to give details on his results. Obama once famously bowled a 37 at a campaign event in Pennsylvania in 2008, joking afterward: "I was terrible."

? SHAVED ICE: Obama and the girls went with family friends to Island Snow in Kailua, a shaved ice shop in a strip mall near the rented home where they are staying. Obama opted for a multicolored cup. Wearing a casual black polo shirt, he shook hands with some people gathered outside the shop, some with camera phones out as he was inside.

Vegan Menu Planning with Pinterest | THE HEARTY HEART

A self proclaimed Pinterest addict, I consider myself a bit of an expert on the content you?ll find in their Food & Drink Category?enough so to be confident, that you?ll find plenty of ideas for any dietary preference.

With this month?s Young Hearts Challenge being about a plant based diet, I?ve been turning to my ?Eat Me? board for inspiration, almost daily.

http://pinterest.com/emmamazing/eat-me/

http://pinterest.com/emmamazing/eat-me/

I?ve rounded up some of the best plant based (or easily modifiable recipes) here, to fuel a sample menu for 4 days. I recommend making food in batches when you can, enough for 3-5 days. Sometimes you?ll just need to leave garnishes in small side bowls, or dress just before serving (i.e. salads). Rotate & swap your menu around on food prep day. One 3-4 hour timeframe (including shopping & prepping) every 3-5 days is not unreasonable, but I get that not everyone enjoys food prep. If you?re one of these folks, stay tuned later this week for a post on choosing healthy, prepared vegan foods & dining out.

Three dead in Swiss shooting, suspect wounded, arrested

GENEVA (Reuters) - Three people were killed and two wounded late on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire in the Swiss village of Daillon, Swiss police said on Thursday.

The suspect threatened police when they tried to arrest him, and officers shot and wounded him before taking him into custody, police of the Swiss canton of Valais said in a statement. No police officers were wounded.

Swiss website 20minutes.ch reported that the gunman was a resident of the village aged about 30 who was armed with an assault rifle and had been drinking heavily.

It quoted a villager as saying one of the dead was a woman in her 80s.

Special police units and local police forces were alerted by a caller who said several people were lying wounded on the ground at about 8:50 p.m. (1950 GMT), the police statement said.

It said the incident was being investigated and the site had been closed off. More information would be released later on Thursday at a news conference in the village, which is close to the town of Sion, the capital of the canton - or region - of Valais.

Mass shootings are rare in Switzerland, although gun possession is widespread - some estimates run to at least one for every three of its 8 million inhabitants. Many are stored in people's attics, a legacy of Switzerland's policy of arming its men to defend its neutrality.

Chocolate and depression link | Amihy Pharmacy News

Participants whose screenings have indicated the possibility of major depression ate 11.8 servings of chocolate per month.Their conclusions? Participants who did not screen positive for depression ate 5.4 servings of chocolate per month lexapro and libido.

I am referring to research suggesting a possible link between consumption of chocolate paxil litigation. For years, we learned that in moderation, chocolate is a mood booster. Now, researchers want us to believe otherwise.

Fortunately, a psychologist who is also a woman doesn t that chocolate depression connection. It feels to feel good after eating chocolate is not just a learned behavior cr gain paxil weight.

Some medical experts say that chocolate can cause depression agree that chocolate does not trigger the release of the first so-called well-being of chemicals, including dopamine zoloft kava kava. But they believe that these good feelings are usually brief, lasting only three minutes! As with other food and drink we turn when we re depressed, they said chocolate gives a short burst of happiness. Can happiness gives way to the moods that are often worse than before the chocolate was consumed, and sometimes so bad.

In addition to the monitoring of food consumption, the researchers men and women be screened. None of the participants were taking antidepressants at the time of these projections, nor had any ever been diagnosed as clinically depressed.

Wanting to be absolutely positive results before releasing bad news on the chocolate, the researchers took their study one step further. They controlled the intake of other foods known to influence mood, including caffeine, carbohydrates and lipids. Unfortunately, after controlling for these foods that alter mood, still have only found a correlation between mood and chocolate.

That?s what researchers at the University of California at San Diego and UC Davis has tried to find out. They maintained their simple search, the study of eating chocolate just over 900 men and women. They also controlled the other participants eating habits.

Body Image, fitspiration, fitspo, Jezebel, Pinterest, plastic surgery ...

This post graciously submitted by Virginia Sole-Smith?

Trigger warning:?In order to write today?s post, I have to use and link to images that are potentially triggering for folks with ED/in recovery/generally struggling with negative body image thought patterns right now. I?m going to be making it crystal clear why I do not endorse these images or want you to apply any of them to yourself ? but please tread carefully and skip today?s post if you think this might be sensitive material for you. xo

Body Image, fitspiration, fitspo, Jezebel, Pinterest, plastic surgery, Shoes, The Great Fitness Experiment, thinspiration, Thinspo, Tumblr, Zumba

Oy.

This image has been bopping around Pinterest lately, and it?s part of a whole wave of ?fitspiration? images and messaging that I am having a lot of beef with.

Other examples would be slogans like [trigger!]: ?No matter how slow you?re going, you?re still lapping everyone on the couch,? ?unless you puke, faint or die, keep going,??do not reward yourself with food, you are not a dog,? and ?look good, feel good.? And, of course,?so many images?of tiny, hard-bodied, sweaty women running, twisting, contorting.

As?I mentioned Monday, there?s a crackdown afoot on Tumblr to rein in ?thinspiration,? aka blogs devoted to posting pictures of incredibly skinny women purely to inspire readers to new eating disordered heights. But meanwhile, a lot of that ?thinspo? has migrated over to Pinterest, notes Jezebel. After all, Pinterest is all about collecting images that inspire you. And some people want to be ?inspired? for unhealthy reasons.

So how do all these workout mantras and six-pack ab chicks fit in??As Charlotte over on?The Great Fitness Experiment?puts it: ?Fitspo may be thinspo in a sports bra.??

Exactly.

Sometimes we forget that developing a healthy relationship with physical activity can be just as challenging as?ditching your food guilt?? and that exercise can play as big a role in eating disorders as well, eating. So obsessively collecting and studying workout mantras and pictures of perfectly fit bodies is not necessarily the best move whether you?re in ED recovery (likeCharlotte) or practicing Health At Every Size or otherwise trying to smooth out the rough edges in your body image issues.

The problem is that damaging, triggering fitspo is a lot harder to spot than thinspo. A photo of an emaciated woman? You know I?m going to tell you?not to offer her a sandwich?or make assumptions about her health based on her weight. But I?m also going to admit that at either end of the weight spectrum things get a little more cut and dried. Truly emaciated is unhealthy.

Tne?no pain, no gain?rhetoric of fitspo, on the other hand? Now we?re in murkier waters. There is such a thing as healthy competition, after all. Lots of people genuinely enjoy the endorphin-riddled pay-off that you can only get from intense physical activity. Why shouldn?t they celebrate and share that joy via inspiration boards? And you most definitely cannot start making health assumptions about the super-ripped or super-flexible women featured in these photographs. Other than: They have a lot of visible muscle tone and they can put their feet behind their heads or what have you.

But you can parse out the Fat Talk behind the fitspo. Exhibit A: The slogan pictured up top. Any motivational statement that has to diss another type of body in order to make you feel good about your body? Not. Helping. Anyone.

For starters, who says you can?t be skinny and fit? Or fit and look good in clothes? Or skinny and look good naked? Or neither skinny nor fit and still good-looking both clothed and naked? It?s unproductive any way you slice it.

Ditto hating on people sitting on the couch. Why go there? Now, how will you feel the next time you do decide to sit on your couch instead of going for a run ? no matter how valid the reason?

And you can also pay attention to how it makes you feel to be ?inspired? by lots of photos of a largely unattainable beauty ideal.?Because that?s what rock hard abs are, after all. Yes, sure, core strength is important for your health. But pictures of bikini-clad, chiseled muscles beaded with sweat? That?s about pretty, not about health. And it?s fine to exercise for aesthetic benefits ? but I do think it helps to stay clear on your motivations and not get?health and the Beauty Myth all tangled up together?when they are actually two separate conversations.

Last tip:?Be wary of any body-related ?inspiration? that comes at you by way of advertisements, which a lot of these Pinterest images actually are. Nike, Lululemon, Athleta and friends all use a lot of big, fancy girl power talk to sell us stretchy pants and sports bras just like?Bare Escentuals wants to be about more than pretty?when it is really just about makeup. This is fine if you?re in the market for some new stretchy pants or a sports bra; not fine if you?re hoping their marketing materials will teach you something profound about yourself. See: Jezebel?s perfect takedown of?Equinox?s new public awareness campaign about ?skinny fat.??And see also: Amanda Rosenberg?s simple-yet-brilliant??The 10 Least Inspirational Sentences on This Lululemon Tote.?

Because bottom line: Fitspiration?is?thinspiration, even when it?s dissing skinny girls. It?s not about health ??it?s about using ?health? and ?fit? as code words for beauty standards. And I support your right to chase that fitspiring beauty dragon through a Zumba class if ?fit? is one of the beauty standards that really sets your heart on fire. Just know that your beauty standard isn?t any more morally righteous than the woman who chases?the plastic surgery dragon?or?me with all of my shoes.

And also: If it gets to be too much, and you want to break up with fitspiration, maybe go sit on your couch for awhile, and then figure out some fun ways to be physically active for yourhealth?s?sake? that is also an option.

Thoughts? How does fitspiration imagery make you feel?

2012 marred by U.S. mass shooting casualties

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A single bullet hole.

Surrounded by peeling orange paint. Marked by a small plaque inscribed with "We Are One" and "8-5-12."

While diminutive, it is a powerful reminder to those who come now to pray here of the carnage that descended on this Sikh temple nearly five months ago. A white supremacist went on a rampage, killing six worshipers and wounding four, including a police officer, before being shot by police and then taking his own life.

"We left one bullet hole to remember them ... to honor them by," said Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka, 29, a nephew of one of the victims and a member of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, a suburb of Milwaukee.

"This is the one we wanted to keep to remember that day and what happened. For us, it was a very important day for all of us here. It changes our perspective on things," he said.

As they search for a way to cope with their loss, to remember and to honor the massacre's victims, Kaleka and his family and fellow congregants share a profoundly melancholic bond with hundreds of others from around the United States who survived or lost loved ones in one of the year's other shooting rampages.

In a country that averages nearly 11 shooting deaths per day -- more than 12,000 people were killed a year in gun-related homicides or accidents on average between 2008 and 2010, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence -- 2012's mass shootings have a distinct and tragic hue if for no other reason than the everyday nature of their locations.

In addition to the six dead in Oak Creek, the year's tally includes:

* Four killed in an Atlanta day spa in February

* Five killed at a Seattle coffee shop in May

* Six killed at a Minneapolis sign company in September

* Seven killed at an Oakland religious college in April

* Twelve killed and 58 wounded in a Denver-area movie theater in July

The most shattering of all, however, was also the year's last: Twenty six killed -- including 20 first graders and six adults -- at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Particularly schools, Sandy Hook, when you are talking about kindergartners or first-graders being mowed down, that is something that is almost unimaginable," said Robert Sampson, a professor of social sciences at Harvard University.

In all, 140 people were killed or wounded in seven mass shootings in 2012, making it the bloodiest year for these types of incidents in modern U.S. history, according to an accounting by Mother Jones, the liberal-leaning magazine.

But as the nation struggles to come to grips with these horrific episodes and continues to grapple with its gun-control policies, researchers say it is too early to say if 2012 marks a broader trend of increasing mass shootings in the United States.

"There have been some years when there have been spikes and other years when there have been low points, but you can't say because we had one year in 2012 of a number of high profile cases that this is a trend. It's not," said Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox, who writes a blog about crime and the justice system for the Boston Globe.

During the last 35 years, there has been an average of about 20 shooting rampages annually with about 100 casualties, according to Fox, who uses a broader definition of a mass shooting than Mother Jones.

"Some years we have several large ones and those are the times when people start talking (whether this) is a new thing, an epidemic. It's not. Because the following years, things are quieter," Fox said.

Bills fire Gailey after 3 straight losing seasons

(AP) ? Chan Gailey didn't work out after three losing seasons, leaving the Buffalo Bills looking for their fifth head coach since 2001.

The Bills fired Gailey on Monday after he failed to deliver on his vow to transform a losing franchise into a playoff contender. Gailey's entire staff was fired, too, but the status of general manager Buddy Nix remained uncertain, and could be decided as early as Tuesday.

Bills CEO Russ Brandon returned to Buffalo on Monday night after spending the day meeting with team owner Ralph Wilson at his home outside Detroit. Nix did not make the trip, and instead stayed at the team's facility.

The Bills have made tentative plans to have a team official address the media Tuesday.

The decision to fire Gailey was announced shortly after Brandon arrived in Detroit.

Gailey's teams lost twice as many games as they won, going 16-32 over three seasons. The Bills have now posted eight straight losing seasons, and closed with a second straight 6-10 mark after beating the New York Jets 28-9 on Sunday.

"I understand this is a business," said Gailey, who had at least one year left on his contract. "We didn't get the job done."

Gailey spoke for a little over a minute. He declined to take questions, while growing emotional at one point. Among the assistants fired were assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt.

"I've been called two other times to get things turned around, was able to do it," Gailey said, referring to previous stops with Dallas (1998-99) and Georgia Tech (2002-07). "We weren't able to get this one done soon enough, and I understand that completely."

It was a disappointing finish for a team that had much higher aspirations. The Bills spent much of the past 14 months securing their top players, re-signing receiver Stevie Johnson and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to lucrative multiyear contracts.

The spending spree reached its peak in March, when they signed defensive end Mario Williams to a six-year, $100 million contract.

"It's always disappointing," said defensive tackle Kyle Williams, one of the only players left in the locker room when the team announced Gailey's firing.

What frustrates Williams more is how the Bills keep making changes without getting any results.

"I get tired of losing," Williams said. "More than anything, I get tired of putting in tons and tons of work. And it's hard sitting here talking to you guys at the end of December feeling like another one kind of slipped through your fingers."

What's next remains unclear.

Nix was not available Monday, and canceled his weekly radio show on Friday.

Gailey's dismissal is a significant setback for Nix. The general manager announced in November that Gailey wasn't going anywhere, because another coaching change would stunt the team's development.

The Bills, however, closed by losing seven of their final 10 games.

Wilson had initially backed Nix's build-through-the-draft approach. Three years ago, the 94-year-old owner said he expected the rebuilding process could take as long as five years.

Brandon has been unhappy with the criticism leveled at the Bills, and how it's translated into poor ticket sales. Buffalo failed to sell out its three of its final four home games. And the fourth, against St. Louis on Dec. 9, wasn't a sellout until a local restaurateur purchased the remaining 10,000 tickets.

One option is for the Bills to make a splash in hiring their next head coach, as they attempted in their previous search.

After firing Dick Jauron in November 2009, Wilson expressed a desire to open his checkbook to lure a high-profile coach to Buffalo only to be rebuffed by Mike Shanahan, who instead landed in Washington.

The most high-profile candidates available include coach-turned-broadcaster Jon Gruden and Andy Reid, who was fired by Philadelphia on Monday. Then there's two candidates in the college ranks, Oregon's Chip Kelly and Penn State's Bill O'Brien, who had numerous friends and former colleagues on Gailey's staff.

An offensive specialist, Gailey was unable to spark the Bills popgun attack under Fitzpatrick. The Bills finished 19th in the NFL in yards gained and 21st in points this season. Gailey was faulted for under-utilizing the offense's most dynamic threat, running back C.J. Spiller.

"It's sickening," running back Fred Jackson said, referring to how the Bills failed to play up to expectations. "As players, we had the highest hopes out of everybody. And for us to fall short of that, we don't like it at all. It's depressing."

Ultimately, it was the Bills' porous defense that doomed Gailey.

The Bills allowed 400-plus points in each of the past three seasons, including 435 this year ? the second-most in team history. Though Williams' presence improved the pass rush, Buffalo became the NFL's eighth team, and first since the 1986 Jets, to allow 45 points four times in one season.

Fitzpatrick's status is uncertain in part because he's due a $3 million bonus in March. He went 16-29 since taking the starting job three games into the 2010 season.

Fitzpatrick declined to speculate on his future. After speaking to reporters, Fitzpatrick hugged Johnson, and the two left with the receiver's arm over the quarterback's shoulder.

Reading from notes he jotted on a Bills pad, Gailey's eyes welled with tears when he credited Bills fans for their loyalty, and Buffalo for being a passionate football city.

"I think that the next staff will have a great opportunity for success, and make this another great football franchise," Gailey said. "This will probably be, and I say probably, but I think it will be the first place that's ever fired me that I'll pull for."
