Love Of Family & Home: Valentine's Day Yarn Wreath with Felt ...

Hey Friends!!

I hope y'all are having a great weekend!

This week wraps-up the last week of our "Dog Days of Winter" Challenges. The theme for this week's challenge is "Love It." That means we want to see all of your Valentine's Day related projects! It can be Valentine's Day decor, crafts, and/or recipes. I'm excited to share my project for the challenge with you today!?

My Valentine's Day Wreath.....

What do you think?!?

I know it's not the traditional Valentine's Day colors, but that's alright with me. Sometimes it's fun to change things up a bit, don't ya think?!

This wreath was super easy to make! I just started with a straw wreath that I purchased at Hobby Lobby. It was $3.99, but I used my 40% off coupon to purchase it. I bought a package of light gray yarn (also from Hob Lob) & just wrapped it around the straw wreath until it was completely covered. There is no need to take the plastic packaging off the straw wreath....just leave it in place!!

Then I got busy making these super fun felt roses to decorate the wreath. I just bought several different colors of felt at Hobby Lobby to make them.?

1. Start buy cutting a circle out of the felt. For larger roses, you'll want a large circle. For smaller roses, you'll need a small one. To give the look of petals, you can cut out of wavy pattern along the outside edge.

2. Then cut your circle in a spiral as shown in the picture above. Continue the wavy pattern throughout until you reach the center of the circle, which will be your flower base.?

3. Starting at the outside of the felt/circle, begin rolling your felt towards the center.

4. The more you roll it, the more it should start resembling a rose.?

5. When you get to the end, you will be left with the base at the center of the circle. Hot glue the felt rose to the base to secure it. If the base is wider than the rose itself, simply trim off any excess.?

To dress them up a bit, I hot glued a pearl to the center of each rose. This is completely optional. ?I used my leftover pearls from this project. Then I hot glued each rose to the wreath.?

Once I had all of my roses made, I decided to add a little bunting to the center of the wreath. I just used some cardstock & my cricut machine to cut out my triangles & the letters "XOXO".

You can secure the bunting to the wreath using straight pins and/or hot glue.?

Once my bunting was added, the wreath was ready for a little photoshoot....

I just hung my wreath using some pink & white polka dot ribbon that I found at Walmart. You can hang yours however you like!

So, that's it!! Easy peasy & super cute!! Or at least I think so! :)

Be sure to come back tomorrow to show off your Valentine's day creations!! We can't wait to see what you've been working on!!

Don't forget, if you link up on just one blog, your project will be seen on all NINE blogs!! So, get those projects completed & get your posts ready!!

If you don't have a blog, I would still?LOVE?for you to join in!! Share a picture of your project with me on my?Facebook Page! I will be sharing some of my favorites over the course of the week!

Meet Miss February: Jennifer K And Find Out How She Lost Over ...

jennifer k lost over 100lbs at lucille roberts

Check out the full February 2013 issue here.

?(Editor?s Note: I love all of our cover stories and success stories, but this one is particularly moving. Jennifer is an inspiration to us all whether you want to lose 5, 10, 50 or over 100lbs. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your story!)

Jennifer Before and After

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 40 years old, happily married, mom to four wonderful kids aged 17, 15, 12, and 8 years old, from North Babylon, NY on Long Island. I love music, dancing, working out, running races, baking and taking pictures, especially of my family.

2. When and why did you commit yourself to losing weight?

My Weight Loss Journey started on November 3, 2010. In late 2010, I faced a number of different health problems. I was overweight, suffered from herniated and slipped disks, had high blood pressure and cholesterol as well as ovarian cysts and nodules on my thyroid (cancer scare). With a family history of Type 2 diabetes, I was at risk of developing the disease. To top things off, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease in September 2010. I felt like my world was falling apart. But the wake-up call that snapped me into action happened on a vacation to Aruba when I could hardly fit into my airplane seat and wasn?t able to buckle the seat belt. I thought to myself, ?I can?t be that fat, can I?? But I was. That day, I made the commitment to quit my bad habits and adopt a healthier way of life through diet and exercise.

3. What led you to join Lucille Roberts ?

After working out at home for a couple of months, I was getting bored of the same old workout DVD?s and one day my friend took me as a guest to the gym that she belonged to. I enjoyed working out at the gym but did not feel comfortable working out in front of men. That night I came home and actually saw a commercial on TV for Lucille Roberts and the next day I took my friend with me to the Lucille Roberts in Bayshore with our guest passes, to check it out. When I walked in I was welcomed with open arms. The staff understood my goals and challenges and explained to me how I can make it happen and how it will happen. They were very encouraging. I have been a member ever since. I also love that it is an all women gym. I feel very comfortable working out because I feel we can all relate to each other. Working out in a group setting with all women is also very encouraging and motivating. I find that I push myself more working out with others and it is so much more fun!

4. What steps did you take to lose over 100lbs?

I knew I had a lot of weight to lose and that diet alone just wasn?t going to do it for me. Besides changing my eating habits for the better, I wanted to try and incorporate working out in my routine to help me lose the weight faster but also to help tone so I would not have sagging skin since I had over 100 lb. to lose. I wanted to get healthier and stronger since I had so many health problems, and the one thing the doctor said would help me with a lot of my issues was working out. I started off slow: 15 minutes at a time at home with workout DVDs.

5. What were your biggest food and exercise challenges and?how did you overcome them?

I was just not eating healthy or thinking?about what I put in my mouth. I was over eating and my portions were out of control. I knew I had to get healthy and couldn?t eat like that anymore. I started following a diet of no white carbs and no added sugar, only natural sugars from fruits. I eat a lot of lean protein and a lot of vegetables along with whole wheat carbs every now and then. I now eat to fuel my body instead of destroy it. Eating this way is a lifestyle change that I can follow for the rest of my life.

The challenge I had with exercise was I hated it, I did not want to exercise. It was like torture to me and not fun at all until I joined Lucille Roberts. The best thing I did for myself during my weight loss journey was rewarding myself with a Lucille Roberts Gym Membership! I have not been the same since. I am healthier and stronger. I come to the gym every day since I joined. I started off just using the machines like the treadmill and elliptical. I would watch the classes as I was on them. After about a week of watching the classes I decided to give the classes a try and ever since then I am HOOKED. I LOVE them all and I love that Lucille Roberts switches the classes up to challenge us and keeps things interesting.

6. Was there ever a moment when you felt like giving up? What did you do to stay motivated?

There were times when I did feel like giving up especially at the beginning when I did not see any results and at other times along my journey. I Never did give up though. I thought to myself what will happen to me ,especially with all the health issues I had, if I gave up? Will I be around for my family? As a mother of four children, I wanted to be a model of good health. I had more than 100 pounds to lose and looking at that big number was often very overwhelming, so I set mini goals of ten pounds at a time and kept at the exercise, which helped me stay motivated. I also kept pictures of my progress on my wall which helped me realize that I never wanted to go back to where I started and that would happen if I gave up.

7. Do you feel that having a support team is important? Who?is on yours?

I absolutely think a support team is key for anyone who?wants to lose weight and workout to be their best. I have the greatest support team in the world. My family and my friends are my biggest supporters and are very encouraging. They have been my cheerleaders along my journey. Another support team of mine is my second family away from home, the members, instructors, and staff at Lucille Roberts Bayshore. The instructors are so motivating and push me to achieve things I never thought I could do with their classes. They have shown me how strong I actually am and have been there to help with any questions I have had and any struggles that I have come across.

I have made so many close friendships since I joined and everyone there is just like family. We are all there for each other, listen to each other and help?encourage?and inspire each other. So many people have come up to me let me know how incredible and amazing I look and how much of an inspiration I am for them to get started on their weight-loss journeys.?It?s the most wonderful feeling in the world to be able to inspire others and show them that their journeys can lead to health and happiness. I could not have been successful on this journey without all the support from everyone I have and that have come into my life since I began this new healthy lifestyle change.

8. What can you do now that you never thought you could do?

I am loving the challenge of taking on new things and feeling stronger and healthier every day. I love being able to run around with my kids and do things I never thought were possible for me. In October 2011 I ran my first 5k race. Since then I have run 4 more 5k?s and one 10K. In March of 2012 I ran my very first half marathon and finished in 2 hours and 36 minutes. When I first started my journey, if someone told me I would be running a half marathon, I would have laughed in their face. I couldn?t even walk up a flight of stairs without becoming out of breath. Who would have ever thought that I would LOVE and WANT to work out? It is the BEST thing for you!!! This coming from a person who hated exercising. Now I don?t know what I would do if I couldn?t get to the gym.

9. How do you feel when you look into the mirror?

I used to?be ashamed of the person I saw in the mirror before I started my journey. In fact I would try to avoid mirrors at all costs. Now I actually like to look in the mirror and see the person that I have become. I feel amazing, happy, proud, healthy, athletic, self confident, and accomplished knowing how far I have come from the person that I used to be. I see a person who is going to be around a long time for her kids, family and friends.

10. What advice do you have for women who are trying to lose?weight and meet their fitness goals?

I have my favorite quote that I always think of and that I have up on my refrigerator: ?Nothing is impossible: the word itself says I?m Possible?. Keep at it for a healthier, happier you because it IS possible! Everyone can lose weight and meet their fitness goals; just keep at it and don?t give up even if the results are not happening as fast as you would like. After 14 months, I am 115 lb. lighter because I DID NOT GIVE UP!! I was able to run my First Half Marathon because I DID NOT GIVE UP!! Make small changes and set mini-goals throughout instead of looking at the big picture?this helped me so much. And remember, slow and steady wins the race. It is a lifetime journey. I am living proof that you CAN change your body. 115 lb. later, I am feeling Strong, Sexy, and Confident!!!

Biden raises possibility of direct U.S.-Iran talks

MUNICH (Reuters) - The United States is ready for direct talks with Iran if it is serious about negotiations, Vice President Joe Biden said on Saturday, backing bilateral contact many see as crucial to easing a dispute over Tehran's nuclear program.

Speaking at a security conference in Munich, Biden said Iran - which says it is enriching uranium for peaceful energy only - now faced "the most robust sanctions in history" meant to ensure it does not develop nuclear weapons.

"But we have also made clear that Iran's leaders need not sentence their people to economic deprivation and international isolation," Biden said. "There is still time, there is still space for diplomacy backed by pressure to succeed. The ball is in the government of Iran's court."

To date, fitful talks on Iran's nuclear program have been between Tehran and the EU's top diplomat representing six world powers including Washington. But analysts have suggested that with his re-election behind him, President Barack Obama might have more leeway to take on direct negotiations with Iran.

That makes the year ahead critical for chances of overcoming a stand-off which, if left to fester further, could see Iran approach nuclear weapons capability, possibly provoking military action by Israel that could inflame the Middle East.

Progress on Iran would also help ease regional tensions as the United States prepares to pull most combat troops out of Iran's neighbor Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Asked whether Washington might consider direct talks with Iran to smooth the process, Biden said, "When the Iranian leadership, Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Ali Khamenei), is serious.

"We have made it clear at the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally with the Iranian leadership, we would not make it a secret that we were doing that, we would let our partners know if that occasion presented itself.

"That offer stands, but it must be real and tangible and there has to be an agenda that they are prepared to speak to. We are not just prepared to do it for the exercise."

Negotiations with Iran have so far been overseen by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on behalf of France, Britain, Germany, China, Russia and the United States. But they have made scant headway, raising fears Iran is simply playing for time while it develops nuclear know-how.

Ashton has asked Iran to hold a round of talks this month and on Friday called on Tehran to abandon plans to install and operate advanced centrifuges that would speed up its ability to enrich uranium - potentially making it easier for it to produce the highly-enriched uranium needed for nuclear weapons.

Many believe no deal is possible without a U.S.-Iranian thaw, requiring direct talks addressing myriad sources of mutual mistrust and hostility lingering since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution and the hostage crisis at the U.S. embassy in Tehran.

Iran has avoided direct, public talks with the United States, though some suggest Tehran would eventually welcome an opportunity to end its international isolation.

Speaking at a news conference in Munich, Republican Senator John McCain said he would have no objection to direct talks but questioned how much these would achieve if fundamental questions over Iran's nuclear program remained unresolved.

"I don't know when we will have direct talks between the United States and Iran. That is a subject for the president of the United States. I don't think anyone here objects to that," he said. But he added, "to have grounds for optimism, I think, would be a mistake."

"DECISIVE YEAR ON IRAN"

With Iran holding its own presidential elections in June, hopes of progress before then are limited.

The United States and its allies, however, do not have an indefinite amount of time to negotiate. Notwithstanding the current stalemate, Iran's nuclear program is advancing and international consensus on sanctions may be hard to maintain.

Israel, which describes the prospect of Iran being able to weaponize enriched uranium as an existential threat, has made clear it would be ready to bomb the nuclear sites of its arch-enemy to prevent that outcome. The United States has also said it would not rule out the use of military force.

Speaking at the Munich conference, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said that "2013 is the decisive year on Iran, especially for political reasons.

"We had elections in the United States and Israel, we will have elections in June in Iran; we see increasing capabilities especially with the issue of enrichment - let us be very frank, we did not have progress in the last 12 months, so it is obvious that we have to use this year.."

Russia, which has been impatient with decades of U.S. hostility to Tehran since its 1979 Islamic Revolution but backed U.N. Security Council sanctions since 2006, repeated on Saturday the need to find a diplomatic solution.

"Iran must know the overall game plan, it must see what is in it for it in this process. We need to convince Iran that this is not about regime change ... this mistrust must be overcome," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the conference.

That comment was echoed by Westerwelle.

"If we want to reach this goal, it would be wrong to discuss all these military options and possibilities. It is now important to focus our whole attention, all our effort for a diplomatic and political solution."

This would have to include a relief from sanctions as well as recognition of Iran's right to enrich uranium to the lower levels needed for civilian nuclear fuel, security analysts say.

Iran made no immediate comment on the possibility of direct talks with the United States, but its foreign minister was due to address the annual Munich Security Conference on Sunday.

Family of Minnesota office shooting victim sues

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The family of one of six people killed in an attack on a Minneapolis office last year is suing the company and the attacker's estate.

Family members of Jacob Beneke contend in their lawsuit that Accent Signage Systems should have known that the attacker, Andrew Engeldinger, had violent tendencies, was mentally unstable and was a potential danger to others.

Among other things, the family claims the company was negligent when it notified Beneke a week before the September attack that he could be fired and it failed to arrange for extra security on the day he was dismissed.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the lawsuit in advance of Friday's formal announcement. It's being filed in Hennepin County.

A message left with Accent Signage was not immediately returned.

Syria threatens retaliation for Israeli airstrike

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria threatened Thursday to retaliate for an Israeli airstrike and its ally Iran said the Jewish state will regret the attack.

Syria sent a letter to the U.N. Secretary-General stressing the country's "right to defend itself, its territory and sovereignty" and holding Israel and its supporters accountable.

"Israel and those who protect it at the Security Council are fully responsible for the repercussions of this aggression," the letter from Syria's Foreign Ministry said.

U.S. officials said Israel launched a rare airstrike inside Syria on Wednesday targeting a convoy carrying anti-aircraft weapons bound for Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese militant group allied with Syria and Iran.

In Israel, a lawmaker close to hard-line Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stopped short of confirming involvement in the strike. But he hinted that Israel could carry out similar missions in the future.

The attack has inflamed regional tensions already running high over Syria's 22-month-old civil war.

Israeli leaders in the days leading up to the airstrike had publicly expressed concern that Syrian President Bashar Assad may be losing his grip on the country and its arsenal of conventional and nonconventional weapons.

The Syrian military denied there was any such weapons convoy. It said low-flying Israeli jets crossed into the country over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and bombed a scientific research center. The facility is in the area of Jamraya, northwest of Damascus. and about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the Lebanese border.

A U.S. official said the airstrike targeted trucks containing sophisticated Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles. The trucks were next to the military research facility identified by the Syrians, and the strike hit both the trucks and the facility, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the operation.

If the SA-17s were to have reached Hezbollah, they would have greatly inhibited the Israeli air force's ability to operate in Lebanon, where Israel has flown frequent sorties in recent years.

Maj. Gen. Abdul-Aziz Jassem al-Shallal, who in December became one of the most senior Syrian army officers to defect, told The Associated Press by telephone from Turkey that the targeted site is a "major and well-known" center to develop weapons called the Scientific Research Center.

Al-Shallal, who until his defection was commander of the military police, said no chemical or nonconventional weapons are at the site. He added that foreign experts, including Russians and Iranians, are usually present at such centers.

Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karim Ali threatened retribution for the Israeli airstrike, saying Damascus "has the option and the capacity to surprise in retaliation."

He told Hezbollah's al-Ahd news website that it was up to the relevant authorities to prepare the retaliation and choose the time and place.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry summoned Major-General Iqbal Singh Singha, the head of mission and force commander for United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on the Golan Heights, to complain about the Israeli violation.

The force was established in 1974 following the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces in the area and has remained there since to maintain the cease-fire. Israel captured the Golan, a strategic plateau, from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.

At U.N. headquarters in New York, deputy U.N. spokesman Eduardo del Buey said: "UNDOF did not observe any planes flying over the area of separation, and therefore was not able to confirm the incident." UNDOF also reported bad weather conditions, he said.

Hezbollah condemned the attack as "barbaric aggression" and said it "expresses full solidarity with Syria's command, army and people."

The group did not mention any weapons convoy in the statement but said the strike aimed to prevent Arab and Muslim forces from developing their military capabilities.

In Iran, the country's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, said "the Zionist regime will regret its aggression against Syria," Iran state television said.

The semi-official Fars news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian as saying the raid will have significant implications for Israel.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi condemned the airstrike on state television, calling it a clear violation of Syrian sovereignty. Iran is Syria's strongest ally in the Middle East, and has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years.

Russia, Syria's most important international ally, said this appeared to be an unprovoked attack on a sovereign nation. Moscow said it was taking urgent measures to clarify the situation in all its details.

"If this information is confirmed, we have a case of unprovoked attacks on targets in the territory of a sovereign state, which grossly violates the U.N. Charter and is unacceptable," Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "Whatever the motives, this is not justified."

Incoming Israeli lawmaker Tzachi Hanegbi, who is close to Prime Minister Netanyahu, said pinpoint strikes are not enough to counter the threat of Hezbollah obtaining sophisticated weaponry from Syria.

"Israel's preference would be if a Western entity would control these weapons systems," Hanegbi said. "But because it appears the world is not prepared to do what was done in Libya or other places, then Israel finds itself like it has many times in the past facing a dilemma that only it knows how to respond to," he added.

He was referring to NATO's 2011 military intervention in Libya that helped oust dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

"Even if there are reports about pinpoint operations, these are not significant solutions to the threat itself because we are talking about very substantial capabilities that could reach Hezbollah," he said.

Syria's civil war has sapped Assad's power and threatens to deprive Hezbollah of a key supporter, in addition to its land corridor to Iran. The two countries provide Hezbollah with the bulk of its funding and arms.

Earlier this week, Netanyahu warned of the dangers of Syria's "deadly weapons," saying the country is "increasingly coming apart."

The same day, Israel moved a battery of its new "Iron Dome" rocket defense system to the northern city of Haifa, which was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire in the 2006 war. The Israeli army called that move "routine."

The Israeli army won't say whether Iron Dome was sent north in connection to this operation. It does note that it has deployed the system in the north before.

A U.N. diplomat confirmed that the organization received a letter from the Syrian ambassador but said it did not contain a request for a Security Council meeting.

A U.N. statement said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed grave concern over reports of Israeli airstrikes on Syria but said the U.N. does not have details of the reported incident and cannot independently verify what happened.

"The Secretary-General calls on all concerned to prevent tensions or their escalation in the region, and to strictly abide by international law, in particular in respect of territorial integrity and sovereignty of all countries in the region," the statement said.

Today's Wine-in-Groceries Bill Report | Humphrey on the Hill ...

By Erik Schelzig, Associated Press
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Supporters of a perennial legislative proposal to allow supermarkets and convenience stores to sell wine expressed confidence Thursday that their latest effort could succeed where previous ones failed.

But the bill is meeting its usual stiff resistance from liquor store owners and wholesalers, who want to keep the current system that restricts sales of any alcohol strong than 5 percent to liquor stores.

State Sen. Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro and fellow Republican Rep. Jon Lundberg of Bristol said in a press conference that their bill would put the decision before the voters in cities and counties that currently allow liquor sales.

"Tennesseans deserve the opportunity to vote on this issue," Ketron said. "If you're not buying wine where you shop for food, you don't have to vote for it.

"But we think a lot of Tennesseans will vote for it," he said.

Opponents argue the change would unfairly harm existing small businesses and make higher-alcohol drinks more widely available to minors

"These out-of-state chains like Walmart and Kroger are determined to get more profit out of the state of Tennessee, no matter what the cost," Nashville liquor store owner Chip Christianson, an officer in the Tennessee Wine and Spirits Retailers Association , said in a written statement.

"Legislators must realize what these corporations are trying to do and stop them in their tracks," he said.

Lundberg said supporters have tried to negotiate with liquor store owners.

"We've gone to the industry and said, 'Let's talk, and meet about what we can do together,'" Lundberg said. "And frankly, they haven't wanted to sit at that table."

Ketron dismissed claims that minors would have easier access to alcohol. He noted that an existing law requiring grocery and convenience store clerks to check IDs for all beer sales would also apply to wine. He proposed changing state law to include liquor stores under the universal carding law.

"It's time that we treat every alcohol sale the same, regardless of where it's sold," he said.

The bill would prevent grocery and convenience stores from selling wine stronger than 18 percent, a move that sponsors said is meant to prevent them from stocking fortified wines. The measure would not authorize grocery stores to sell beer stronger than 5 percent by weight.

"The beer wholesalers don't support the legislation," said Rich Foge, the president of the Tennessee Malt Beverage Association. "But we think that if you're going to put wine in grocery stores up to 18 percent alcohol, then absolutely a high-gravity beer should be allowed to be sold there, side-by-side with other products."

Ketron said he expects the Senate to evaluate the bill before it is brought up by House committees. The measure has the support of the Republican leaders in both chambers of the General Assembly.

"This really is a reasonable piece of legislation that will be good public policy for Tennessee," said House Speaker Beth Harwell of Nashville.

Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville said he understands the concerns of liquor store owners, but he wants them to take a more serious approach to finding a compromise.

"I'd like to think that we can get this bill out of committee and get it moving, and we'll have some discussion and figure out where the happy median is," Ramsey said.

Note: News release on filing of the bill is below.

News release from Senate Republican Caucus:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - State Sen. Bill Ketron, R-Murfreesboro, and state Rep. Jon Lundberg, R-Bristol, filed legislation today that would let Tennesseans vote on whether to allow the sale of wine in retail food stores via a local referendum.

The referendum bill, if passed, would give municipalities in those communities that currently allow retail package stores, liquor-by-the-drink establishments or both to hold a referendum on the sale of wine in retail food stores during the next general election. The authorization law would take effect on Jan. 1, 2014 and would allow a referendum to be held after that date.

"Rep. Lundberg and I strongly believe that Tennesseans deserve the opportunity to vote on this issue," Sen. Ketron said. "Currently, municipalities decide whether to allow retail package stores or liquor-by-the drink in their communities, so it makes sense to also take the issue of where to sell wine to the voters."

In order to place the referendum on the ballot, a petition must be presented to the county election commission where the referendum is to be held. The petition must include signatures from 10 percent of the county's population that voted in the last gubernatorial election. The legislation as written provides the exact ballot question that will be asked of voters.

"Tennessee loses a significant amount of revenue to our border states," Rep. Lundberg said. "My constituents in Bristol will tell you that they often cross the state line to buy groceries, gasoline and other household necessities. Giving Tennessee's retail food stores the ability to sell wine will make up for some of that lost revenue and add millions to our state's coffers."

Thirty-six states, including six of Tennessee's border states, allow the sale of wine in retail food stores. Kentucky will soon join the list due to a recent federal court ruling which deemed its liquor laws unconstitutional. According to the Tennessee Fiscal Review Committee, state and local revenues will increase by millions of dollars if consumers are allowed to purchase wine where they shop for food. The fees paid by retail food stores' wine licenses will cover the cost of additional Alcoholic Beverage Commission staff members.

The legislation will require any retail food store that sells wine to participate in the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission's Responsible Vendor Program, which requires retailers' employees to complete training on the responsible sale of alcoholic beverages. Retail food stores already practice mandatory carding, regardless of the customer's age or how old he or she might appear to be.

Sen. Ketron and Rep. Lundberg believe that one of the more important pieces of the legislation is the requirement that all retail package stores participate in mandatory carding and take part in the Responsible Vendor Program. Liquor stores are currently exempt from these requirements under current state alcohol laws. This change would allow for uniform treatment of alcohol sales, regardless of where they occur.

The referendum legislation has the support of the Tennessee Grocers & Convenience Store Association and the Tennessee Retail Association. The state's retail food store industry employs an estimated 70,000 Tennesseans and remits hundreds of millions of dollars in sales, real, personal, gross receipts, and Tennessee franchise and excise taxes. Retail food stores support the communities they serve through millions of dollars in annual contributions, countless food donations, and volunteer service to nonprofit organizations, foundations, schools and hunger relief programs.

As you all know and unanimously agree, the Windows tiled interface, known as Metro, known as Modern UI and whatever, is not a friendly beast for users without touch devices. It goes against all the known and unknown paradigms of efficiency and productivity, and as such, must be removed.

Internal switches for disabling this nonsense are no more, but some third party tools allow you to skip the Start screen and go straight into your desktop. Better yet, various third-party tools also let you enjoy the classic menu. The most notable project is the Classic Shell, which returns sanity to sane people who only want to enjoy their computers. And now, there's another little utility, called Pokki Start Menu. We checked.

The name is silly, but the program seems quite decent. The installation is very simple. You grab the basic downloader, and then it will retrieve all its files from the server, so you do need an Internet connection when setting up Pokki.

Installing

Once installed, you gain a little icon where the Start menu button was supposed to be, and this will open a dark-gray dominated menu somewhat like the old stuff, but not quite.

You can check your favorites, browse all apps, go into the Control Panel, access your documents, as well as browse and install various apps from the Pokki App Store, so it's not just a shell replacement, it's an entire bundle, also designed to entice you to try and buy various other Pokkiproducts.

I found the notion of offering me apps, including stupidities like Angry Turds and Facebook contrary to the logic of having a classic start menu installed. After all, if I want these silly apps, then I am probably using the Modern UI, perhaps on a tablet, and then I sure do not need your menu. On the other, if I'm on a desktop, why the hell would I want to install silly apps?

Never mind all that, let's explore some more. Anyhow, here are a few more screenshots of the menu, with its various sub-categories. If, at all times, and for some weird reason, you do feel like going back to your stupid tiled interface, you can click the little grid icon near the Shut Down option, and this will flip your desktop.

The search function is also quite decent, plus you get Web suggestions, which you can turn off if you don't like them. My recommendation is to turn them off, so you do not forward your private queries to the Pokki servers. Much like the Amazon drama in Ubuntu.

Apps

Going back to apps, if you really must, and you do not like the Microsoft store or you seem incapable of downloading software on your own, then you can use the Pokki store. On a first glance, most of the stuff looks rather trivial and socially oriented. So perhaps the project does cater mostly to less knowledgeable users and whatnot.

Settings

Right-click on the Pokki button, and you can open the settings menu, which lets you configure the system behavior. You can enable or disable the so-called charms and hot corners, decide whether you wish to boot directly to your desktop, use the sidebar, the aforementioned Web results, and more. Flexible and simple.

Conclusion

If you ask me, Classic Shell is the way to go. It's a simple, no-nonsense fix for the integral stupidity of Windows 8. Moreover, the project does not try to sell you anything, does not try to get you onboard the useless apps train, and does not try to sell you a social replacement for a social disaster. Free, GPL, all that.

Regardless, Pokki seems like a decent refuge for confused and lost Windows users, who just want their Start menu back. And if they don't mind some extras, like the ability to install all kinds of programs, some extra Web searches and alike, then Pokki is a suitable replacement, adorned with a fair degree of simplicity and elegance. Plus, most importantly, it does offer the needed core functionality and does not impair your productivity.

You should definitely try it. For purists though, Classic Shell is the answer.

Cheers.
