Meryl Streep Brings The Iron Lady To London For The European Premiere

Meryl Streep is set to walk the red carpet at the European premiere of her new film The Iron Lady tonight.

Streep, who plays former prime minister Lady Thatcher in the film, will be at the event at the BFI on London's Southbank with other members of the cast including Jim Broadbent, Richard E Grant and Olivia Colman.

The film, which switches between the frail former politician of the present day and her pomp in Downing Street in the 1980s, has had mixed reviews.

Critics have hailed Streep's central performance which has already gained her a Golden Globe nomination, but supporters of Lady Thatcher have been less forgiving.

Former cabinet minister Norman Tebbit has criticised the film-makers. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said: "To judge the film from its trailer, they confined their inquiries to the Daily Mirror and perhaps Tim Bell's public relations firm."

And Lady Thatcher's long-term adviser Bernard Ingham said he had "serious reservations" about the film.

Streep, a self-confessed liberal, has said the role has given her a new-found admiration for Lady Thatcher.

Speaking before filming started, she said: "I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses - I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own."
