Soldier killed in Afghanistan noted Quran backlash

DOVER, Del. (AP) ? A U.S. soldier killed during protests in Afghanistan had talked with relatives about the backlash over the burning of Qurans at a U.S. military base shortly before he died.

Cpl. T.J. Conrad of Roanoke, Va., who was promoted posthumously to sergeant, was one of two U.S. military police officers killed Thursday by an Afghan soldier amid rising anti-American sentiment over the Quran burnings, which resulted in two more American deaths on Saturday.

The bodies of Conrad and Sgt. Joshua Born, 25, of Niceville, Fla., both assigned to the Army's Fort Stewart in Georgia, were returned to the military mortuary at Dover Air Force Base on Saturday.

Conrad's oldest sister, Amanda Meland, told The Associated Press he was in good spirits when she and other relatives chatted with him via Skype on Wednesday.

"He was doing good. He had his chin up," she said. "... He did say that things were starting to get crazy from the backlash."

Conrad, the father of a 7-month-old baby, deployed to Afghanistan in January. He would have celebrated his 23rd birthday on March 6.

Meland said Conrad's widow, Holly, was not at the couple's house when military officials initially came to notify her of his death.

"They had come earlier, but she was not there. She had actually just mailed out his birthday package," Meland explained.

Conrad was born in Newport News, Va., and was still a toddler when his family moved to Roanoke, where he was a member of the wrestling team at Northside High School. After high school, he joined the Army Reserve, switching a short time later to active duty.

Meland said Conrad wanted to make the military his career, planning to re-enlist and hoping to be stationed at Fort Eustis, Va., to be closer to family. He was also hoping to have another baby.

Conrad's family has posted a video tribute to him on You Tube.

"We're very proud of our T.J.," said his aunt Shannon Lemm. "We want everyone to know his name and see his face."

Meland described Conrad as a jokester and class clown, always able to bring a laugh to those around him.

"He could barely sit still," she said. "Even when his wife was in labor, he was doing karate moves in the delivery room."

"When we Skyped with him Wednesday morning, he was doing the same thing, making all his jokes," she said.

Meland said the deaths of Conrad and Born, whose relatives also attended Saturday's casualty return, have left both families devastated.

"You see it on TV, you see it in the movies, but you just never expect it's going to be your family or your soldier," she said.

The various concussion-related lawsuits filed in recent months have suddenly taken on a far more serious tone.? According to NBC Chicago, Dave Duerson?s estate has filed a wrongful death action against the NFL.

Duerson committed suicide on February 17, 2011.? The lawsuit claims that, ?[i]f the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas . . . then [he] would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death.?

This allegation presumes that the NFL knew or should have known about the dangers of head traumas during Duerson?s career, and that he would have chosen not to play if that information had been shared with him.

?CTE has been a known entity to the NFL for years,? said William Gibbs, who represents the Duerson estate.? ?This degenerative brain disease causes various symptoms ranging from cognitive decline to dementia.?? The NFL?s blatant disregard of the significance of this crisis amongst its retirees is baffling.?

?We have not seen the lawsuit and therefore our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT.? ?Dave Duerson was an outstanding football player and
citizen who made so many positive contributions but unfortunately encountered serious personal challenges later in his life. We sympathize with the Duerson family and continue to be saddened by this tragedy.?

Hundreds of former players have filed suit against the league, claiming that the NFL knew about the long-term dangers of concussions and failed to disclose those risks to players.? The NFL has argued that relief should be pursued through the collective bargaining process, given that players have been represented by a union, the NFL Players Association.

Duerson played from 1983 through 1993, with the Bears, Giants, and Cardinals, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings.? He was one of the named plaintiffs in the Reggie White antitrust lawsuit, and he was a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.

Last year, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said that Duerson?s death has ?shaken me personally.?? The NFLPA hasn?t said anything about the various and growing concussion lawsuits.? In response to Duerson?s lawsuit, spokesman George Atallah told PFT that the NFLPA has no comment.

Given Duerson?s past role in the NFLPA, one thing to watch going forward is whether the NFLPA will take an affirmative position on the merit of the allegations that the NFL knew about the risks of head injuries and failed to take appropriate action.

Insurance eligibility improves medical care: study | The Raw Story

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? A new study suggests young adults are more likely to get care and see a doctor when states extend the time they can stay on their parents? health insurance ? a measure also mandated by the 2010 federal health care law.

The laws are meant to help those over 18, who typically outgrow their parents? plans but have trouble getting full-time jobs with health coverage after high school.

The authors say even though people between 19 and 29 years old make up 17 percent of adults under age 65, they account for almost 30 percent of the uninsured.

?Ultimately, these state laws, and the provision within the Affordable Care Act (ACA), help provide secure footing just when these young people are starting off on their own,? said Dr. Alexander Blum, the study?s lead author and a health policy researcher at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

In September 2010, the federal government enacted a provision that allows young adults to stay on their parents? private insurance plans through age 26.

For their analysis, Blum and his colleagues looked at 19- to 23-year-olds living in states that passed laws extending their parents? coverage in 2005 or 2006, but did not include Massachusetts because it mandated health insurance.

Blum?s team used a national survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that asked about access to care.

In the years before the state laws? enactment ? 2002 to 2004 ? about 62 percent of the survey respondents could identify a primary doctor and about 77 percent had had a physical exam in the last two years.

A few years down the road ? in 2008 to 2009 ? the researchers observed modest improvements in those numbers to about 66 percent and 81 percent, respectively.

In the states that extended coverage, about 20 percent of the young adults reported during the earlier study period that they went without care due to cost. That number decreased to about 18 percent between 2008 and 2009.

Overall, those were modest improvements over states that did not pass laws extending coverage. And the number of young adults with insurance coverage rose about half a percentage point regardless of whether the state enacted a law or not.

Writing in the journal Pediatrics, Blum and his colleagues suggest this can be explained by the laws encouraging young adults to move to their parents? plans from less comprehensive coverage.

The authors cannot say for certain whether the differences were caused by the new state laws because the CDC?s survey did not ask whether the young adults were covered under their parents? plan.

Alan Monheit, a health policy researcher at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, told Reuters Health that despite limitations of the new study, he believes the insurance extension in the federal law will lead to visible benefits.

?I think that we will see an improvement in coverage with the ACA, and I think the reason is that the ACA now ropes in the self-insured plans,? said Monheit.

Self-insured plans are funded by employers and make up a large part of the U.S. health insurance market. The plans were typically exempt from the state laws that extended coverage to adult children, but are included under the federal law.

The inclusion of self-insured plans is just one of the differences between the state and federal laws, Blum?s team notes, and they are the reason the ACA?s impact will be much greater than that of the state laws.

?Even in the states that had a similar provision, they were much narrower,? agreed Sabrina Corlette, a health policy researcher at Georgetown University?s Health Policy Institute who was not involved in the new study.

Corlette told Reuters Health that many of the state laws limited their insurance extensions based on whether the young adult was a student or married. The federal law expanded coverage in those categories.

In December 2011, the CDC reported that 2.5 million Americans between 19 and 25 years old were able to get health insurance thanks to the ACA.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said the provision increased the number of insured young adults in that age group to 73 percent in June, from 64 percent.

Vancouver, B.C. (Wednesday, February 15, 2012) The problem of invasive species may seem remote from most people's lives. But in some parts of the United Kingdom, an invasive plant creates a problem that hits home, literally. That's because the presence of invasive knotweed on a property prevents potential buyers from obtaining a mortgage. This destructive plant from Asia, which can tear down walls and rip up roads, is also putting down roots in many parts of Canada.

Research by Judith Myers, an ecology professor emerita at the University of British Columbia, shows that the tide can be turned. At this week's meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Vancouver, Myers will talk about how her research has helped reduce the threat of a similar plantknapweed. The rangeland plant had spread through the interior of British Columbia, ruining pastureland for cattle and impacting local economies. Following extensive testing of European insects to find those that would feast on the knapweed but leave everything else alone, a beetle was introduced to North America that has caused a significant and rapid decline in knapweed.

For every one dollar spent on the control program, there was $17 in economic benefit in British Columbia. Considering that a 2008 estimate put the annual cost of invasive weeds at $65 million in British Columbia alone, the success of the program is a win for the economy and for the ecology.

Myers will present her findings at the AAAS session Transcending Interdisciplinary Research Barriers: Best Practices for Mobilizing Knowledge on Saturday, February 18, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., in Room 213 of the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building.

Vancouver, B.C. (Wednesday, February 15, 2012) The problem of invasive species may seem remote from most people's lives. But in some parts of the United Kingdom, an invasive plant creates a problem that hits home, literally. That's because the presence of invasive knotweed on a property prevents potential buyers from obtaining a mortgage. This destructive plant from Asia, which can tear down walls and rip up roads, is also putting down roots in many parts of Canada.

Research by Judith Myers, an ecology professor emerita at the University of British Columbia, shows that the tide can be turned. At this week's meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Vancouver, Myers will talk about how her research has helped reduce the threat of a similar plantknapweed. The rangeland plant had spread through the interior of British Columbia, ruining pastureland for cattle and impacting local economies. Following extensive testing of European insects to find those that would feast on the knapweed but leave everything else alone, a beetle was introduced to North America that has caused a significant and rapid decline in knapweed.

For every one dollar spent on the control program, there was $17 in economic benefit in British Columbia. Considering that a 2008 estimate put the annual cost of invasive weeds at $65 million in British Columbia alone, the success of the program is a win for the economy and for the ecology.

Myers will present her findings at the AAAS session Transcending Interdisciplinary Research Barriers: Best Practices for Mobilizing Knowledge on Saturday, February 18, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., in Room 213 of the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building.
