American activist returns to US after 9 months

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Vietnamese-American activist has returned to the United States after a 9-month detention on accusations of conspiring to overthrow the government.

Nguyen Quoc Quan smiled broadly as he was greeted by his wife and children shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday after getting off a plane at Los Angeles International Airport.

A Foreign Ministry statement said Nguyen Quoc Quan had "confessed to his crime" and asked for leniency to be reunited with his family.

He was arrested in April and released Wednesday before being deported to the U.S. Authorities originally accused him of terrorism but later downgraded the charges to subversion.

The United States has been calling on Vietnam to release Quan, 59, who supporters say is a nonviolent advocate of democratic reforms in Vietnam.

Japan airlines replaced 787 batteries many times

TOKYO (AP) ? All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines said they replaced lithium-ion batteries in their Boeing 787 Dreamliners on multiple occasions before a battery overheating incident led to the worldwide grounding of the jets.

ANA said Wednesday it replaced batteries on its 787 aircraft some 10 times because they failed to charge properly or showed other problems, and informed Boeing about the swaps. Japan Airlines said it had also replaced lithium-ion batteries on its 787 jets but couldn't immediately give details.

All 50 of the Boeing 787s in use around the world were grounded after an ANA flight on Jan. 16 made an emergency landing in Japan when its main battery overheated. Earlier in January, a battery in a Japan Airlines 787 caught fire while parked at Boston's Logan International Airport. Lithium-ion batteries are prone to overheating and require additional safeguards to prevent fires.

ANA spokeswoman Megumi Tezuka said the airline was not required to report the battery replacements to Japan's Transport Ministry because they did not interfere with flights and did not raise safety concerns. She said that having to replace batteries on aircraft is not uncommon and that it was not considered out of the ordinary.

Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman, said in Washington that the agency was checking whether the previous battery incidents had been reported by Boeing.

With 17 of the jets, ANA was Boeing's launch customer for the technologically advanced airliner. The airline has had to cancel hundreds of flights, affecting tens of thousands of people, but has sought to minimize disruptions by switching to other aircraft as much as possible.

The battery problems experienced by ANA before the emergency landing were first reported by The New York Times.

Japanese and U.S. investigators looking into the Boeing 787's battery problems shifted their attention this week from the battery-maker, GS Yuasa of Kyoto, Japan, to the manufacturer of a monitoring system. That company, Kanto Aircraft Instrument Co. makes a system that monitors voltage, charging and temperature of the lithium-ion batteries.

On Tuesday, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it was conducting a chemical analysis of internal short circuiting and thermal damage of the battery that caught fire in Boston.

The probe is also analyzing data from flight data recorders on the aircraft, the NTSB said in a statement on its website.

Billboard redesign brings charts streaming into the 21st century

Image

Back in the old days, music charts were mostly good for hit single montages in movies about struggling bands. These days, chart-making stalwart Billboard's looking to offer up something more, bring its services into the era of streaming media, with a redesign that harnesses Spotify, Rdio and Myspace functionality, letting users listen to the day's tracks in order of popularity, the way they were meant to be listened to, we guess.

Interviews: Ask James Randi About Investigating the Truth

Better known by his stage name "The Amazing Randi", James Randi has made it his quest to "debunk psychic nonsense, disprove paranormal fakers, and squash claims of pseudoscience in order to bring the truth to the forefront." Randi worked as a popular magician most of his life and earned international fame in 1972 when he accused the famous psychic Uri Geller of being a fraud and challenged him to prove otherwise. In 1996 Randi founded The James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) a non-profit organization whose mission includes "educating the public and the media on the dangers of accepting unproven claims, and to support research into paranormal claims in controlled scientific experimental conditions." He began offering $1000 in 1964 to anyone who could demonstrate proof of the paranormal. That amount has grown over the years, and the foundation's prize for such proof is now $1M. Around 1000 people have tried to claim the prize so far without success. Randi has agreed to take a break from busting ghostbusters and giving psychic healers a taste of their own medicine in order to answer your questions. As usual, you're invited to ask as many questions as you'd like, but please divide them, one question per post.

Oil jumps above $97 with economy in focus

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil climbed above $97 a barrel Tuesday for the first time in four months, and analysts said it could go higher if upcoming reports on jobs and U.S. economic growth are positive.

Benchmark oil for March delivery rose $1.13, or 1.2 percent, to close at $97.57 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil hadn't closed above $97 in New York since Sept. 14. It is now up more than $5 a barrel this year and U.S. drivers are finding higher prices at the gas pump.

This is a big week for U.S. economic indicators. So far investors, both in commodities and stocks, have embraced the positive reports while discounting the negative ones.

A report Tuesday showed U.S. home prices in November had the biggest year-over-year increase in six years, as evidence grows that the U.S. housing market is recovering. That outweighed a separate report that indicated higher taxes and an uncertain economic picture are sapping consumer confidence.

The government will also this week release the latest numbers on fourth-quarter growth, weekly jobless claims and January unemployment. If those reports suggest that the economy is strengthening and hiring is picking up, oil would likely add to its recent gains.

Oil has posted seven straight weekly gains, something not seen since 2009, noted Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service. He said the market "seems to want to move above $100" as investors buy on the recent momentum, a trend he refers to as "money chasing money."

It all adds up to higher prices at the pump. The average price for a gallon of gas rose for a 12th straight day Tuesday to $3.36 a gallon, a seven-week high. And Kloza says wholesale prices have risen over the past week, so more increases are likely at the local gas station. Still, he doesn't expect gas to spike as it did last year when the average price rose 55 cents a gallon between Jan. 25 and the end of March.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 88 cents to end at $114.36 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 4 cents to finish at $2.97 per gallon.

? Natural gas lost 6 cents to end at $3.23 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil gained 5 cents to finish at $3.11 a gallon.

'Quantum smell' idea gains ground

The BBC's Jason Palmer visits a perfume store to find out more

A controversial theory that the way we smell involves a quantum physics effect has received a boost, following experiments with human subjects.

It challenges the notion that our sense of smell depends only on the shapes of molecules we sniff in the air.

Instead, it suggests that the molecules' vibrations are responsible.

A way to test it is with two molecules of the same shape, but with different vibrations. A report in PLOS ONE shows that humans can distinguish the two.

Tantalisingly, the idea hints at quantum effects occurring in biological systems - an idea that is itself driving a new field of science, as the BBC feature article Are birds hijacking quantum physics? points out.

But the theory - first put forward by Luca Turin, now of the Fleming Biomedical Research Sciences Centre in Greece - remains contested and divisive.

The idea that molecules' shapes are the only link to their smell is well entrenched, but Dr Turin said there were holes in the idea.

He gave the example of molecules that include sulphur and hydrogen atoms bonded together - they may take a wide range of shapes, but all of them smell of rotten eggs.

"If you look from the [traditional] standpoint... it's really hard to explain," Dr Turin told BBC News.

"If you look from the standpoint of an alternative theory - that what determines the smell of a molecule is the vibrations - the sulphur-hydrogen mystery becomes absolutely clear."

Molecules can be viewed as a collection of atoms on springs, so the atoms can move relative to one another. Energy of just the right frequency - a quantum - can cause the "springs" to vibrate, and in a 1996 paper in Chemical Senses Dr Turin said it was these vibrations that explained smell.

The mechanism, he added, was "inelastic electron tunnelling": in the presence of a specific "smelly" molecule, an electron within a smell receptor in your nose can "jump" - or tunnel - across it and dump a quantum of energy into one of the molecule's bonds - setting the "spring" vibrating.

But the established smell science community has from the start argued that there is little proof of this.

Of horses and unicorns

One way to test the idea was to prepare two molecules of identical shape but with different vibrations - done by replacing a molecule's hydrogen atoms with their heavier cousins called deuterium.

?Start Quote

There are many, many problems with the shape theory of smell - many things it doesn't explain that the vibrational theory does?

End Quote Prof Tim Jacob University of Cardiff

Leslie Vosshall of The Rockefeller University set out in 2004 to disprove Dr Turin's idea with a molecule called acetophenone and its "deuterated" twin.

The work in Nature Neuroscience suggested that human participants could not distinguish between the two, and thus that vibrations played no role in what we smell.

But in 2011, Dr Turin and colleagues published a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showing that fruit flies can distinguish between the heavier and lighter versions of the same molecule.

A repeat of the test with humans in the new paper finds that, as in Prof Vosshall's work, the subjects could not tell the two apart. But the team then developed a brand new, far larger pair of molecules - cyclopentadecanone - with more hydrogen or deuterium bonds to amplify the purported effect.

In double-blind tests, in which neither the experimenter nor the participant knew which sample was which, subjects were able to distinguish between the two versions.

Still, Prof Vosshall believes the vibrational theory to be no more than fanciful.

"I like to think of the vibration theory of olfaction and its proponents as unicorns. The rest of us studying olfaction are horses," she told BBC News.

"The problem is that proving that a unicorn exists or does not exist is impossible. This debate on the vibration theory or the existence of unicorns will never end, but the very important underlying question of why things smell the way they do will continue to be answered by the horses among us."

Tim Jacob, a smell researcher at the University of Cardiff, said the work was "supportive but not conclusive".

"But the fact is that nobody has been able to unequivocally contradict [Dr Turin]," he told BBC News.

"There are many, many problems with the shape theory of smell - many things it doesn't explain that the vibrational theory does."

And although many more scientists are taking the vibrational theory seriously than back in 1996, it remains an extraordinarily polarised debate.

"He's had some peripheral support, but... people don't want to line up behind Luca," Prof Jacob said. "It's scientific suicide."

Columbia University's Richard Axel, whose work on mapping the genes and receptors of our sense of smell garnered the 2004 Nobel prize for physiology, said the kinds of experiments revealed this week would not resolve the debate - only a microscopic look at the receptors in the nose would finally show what is at work.

"Until somebody really sits down and seriously addresses the mechanism and not inferences from the mechanism... it doesn't seem a useful endeavour to use behavioural responses as an argument," he told BBC News.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing off this theory, but I need data and it hasn't been presented."

Kyocera Torque coming to Sprint's Direct Connect lineup in March, we go hands-on (video)

Kyocera Torque

Going to be in the market for a new Direct Connect device soon, but the current offerings seem so... drab? Enter the Kyocera Torque, the latest Sprint smartphone featuring the network's CDMA-based Push-to-Talk service. The phone, which should be available sometime in early March, brings with it LTE connectivity, (mostly) stock Android 4.0, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, HD Voice, 4-inch WVGA display, 4GB internal storage and a 2,500mAh battery. As you'd come to expect on a Direct Connect device, it's also certified mil-spec 810G and IP67 and is water-resistant (it can be in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes). It's also the first on this side of the Pacific to utilize Kyocera's Smart Sonic Receiver tissue-conduction tech, a system that foregoes the traditional earpiece and transmits audio to your ear via vibration.

The Torque packs a lot of average features that would likely put it somewhere in the mid-range (we haven't been given pricing yet), but it's definitely not going to win any beauty awards -- it's still a Direct Connect device, after all. Its outer layer is dressed with Dura-Grip and the phone is plenty bulky as a result; however, it's also much more durable than your standard piece of electronics. We threw the phone at the wall, slammed it repeatedly on the table, dunked it in water and even let it sit in ice for at least 20 minutes, all without incident.

On the software side, the Torque uses a version of stock Android 4.0 with only a small amount of tweaking. Essentially, the only major change added in by Sprint and Kyocera is Eco Mode, a power management system on the Torque that blocks background data connections for nonessential apps. We've put together a gallery of pics for you below, and follow us past the break for a full spec listing and our hands-on video.

Kyocera Torque specs:

  • Military spec 810G and IP67-certified
  • IPX5 / IPX7-certified "waterproof" (up to one meter for 30 minutes)
  • 5.54 ounces (157g)
  • 113 x 60.5 x 14.3mm (4.44 x 2.38 x 0.56 inches)
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1.2GHz dual-core MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 Plus
  • 4-inch WVGA IPS display, Gorilla Glass 2
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage
  • MicroSD (up to 32GB)
  • 2,500mAh battery
  • 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing
  • NFC, WiFi b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 4.0+LE/EDR
  • HD Voice

FORTUNE -- Hey, Apple's (AAPL) down, let's pile on!

That seems to be the attitude -- if a computer can have an attitude -- of the program that filters headlines on Google's (GOOG) financial news feed.

The list at right (expanded below) was generated by doing a Google Finance ?search for "Apple" at 8 a.m. Monday morning. You have to scroll down 24 headlines to get to a positive one ("Apple Inc. sales of $54 billion and profit of $13 billion both break records") which turns out to be Apple's own press release.

Given that many high-frequency trading algorithms are programmed to react to such headlines -- generated by the likes of Insider Monkey and ValueWalk, but not, curiously, Fortune.com -- these things matter.

As the NFL and the NFLPA continue to stare at each other like the boys and girls pressed against opposite walls of a middle-school dance on the issue of HGH testing, Congress is getting closer to pushing the walls together, Star Wars Episode IV-style.? (I thought twice about making that reference because of the nerdish connotation.? But I?ve learned to embrace my nerdishness.)

For now, the wall that?s moving is the one behind the players.

?We are disappointed with the NFLPA?s remarkable recalcitrance, which has prevented meaningful progress on this issue,? Representatives Darrell Issa (R-Cal.) and Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) said in a letter to the NFL Players Association.? ?We intend to take a more active role to determine whether the position you have taken ? that HGH is not a serious concern and that the test for HGH is unreliable ? is consistent with the beliefs of rank and file NFL players.?

The NFL and NFLPA agreed in August 2011 to commence HGH testing.

?Despite being the first of the major professional sports leagues to agree to test for HGH, the NFL has now fallen far behind its counterparts in implementing the agreement,? the letter continues. ?While NFLPA management may not believe that HGH is a problem in the NFL, the words of your athletes suggest otherwise.? We hope the facts collected by the Committee will provide you and the NFL with the information necessary to resolve this matter.?

The letter also asks the NFLPA to produce a variety of documents and other information, including the NFLPA?s most recent proposal for HGH testing and information regarding any proposals exchanged between the NFL and the NFLPA during meetings that were planned for the week of January 21.? (It?s unclear whether any meetings actually happened.)

Congressional involvement in the form of a hearing at which players would testify is something about which both the NFL and the NFLPA should be deeply concerned.? If players are using HGH and they tell the truth to Congress, it makes the league and the union look very bad.? If players are using it and they lie, the players expose themselves to potential criminal prosecutions.

There?s no reason for the impasse to continue.? The NFLPA has said that it will accept HGH testing under the standards and procedures implemented by major-league baseball.? The NFL has indicated that would be sufficient.? So why not get together ? this week in New Orleans ? to hash out the details?

If not, players could be getting together in Washington to do something far less pleasant for everyone.

NBA Co-Owner Shares Secrets to Happiness - Care2

Does the idea of loving yourself as the key to loving others seem like a paradox? According to Richard Jaffe, one of the owners of the Phoenix Suns, it is fundamental.

?I?ve found that loving myself is fundamental to my happiness. The one person I have a relationship with for my entire life is myself, so it?s essential to make that relationship my priority. When I have the inner peace that comes from loving myself, I don?t have to look to others to fill my emotional needs and wants,? Jaffe said.

He shares five tenets that have helped him on his journey through life:

1) Don?t rely on anyone else to make you happy

2) Find your passion and indulge in it

3) Remember ? givers gain

4) Control your thoughts and keep them positive

5) Be the very best you can be at whatever you do

The millionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist shares his thoughts in a volume of inspirational poetry called Inner Peace & Happiness: Reflections to Grow Your Soul. They were written over a period of decades, in response to big life events, or simply to put into words what he was feeling at that time in his life.

By writing poetry, Jaffe lives out his second tip outlined above about indulging in his passion. ?Poetry helps to provide me balance in life between work, family and other external commitments. When I allow myself time to indulge in my passion, I recharge my spirit, my mind and my body,? he said.

Jaffe began his career in 1975, after graduating from Cornell University, with Nutri-Foods International Inc., a company that manufactured frozen Italian ices. After consulting with customers in order to turn the company around, Jaffe reduced the amount of sugar in the products and added fruit juice. He sold it to Coca-Cola in 1985, where it continued to grow.

After taking some time off, Jaffe decided to get back into business by starting a latex glove company. Due to the AIDS epidemic, the CDC had recently recommended an increase in protective wear for medical professionals. Jaffe saw the need for long-wearing latex gloves that did not cause allergic reactions, and in 1987, started Safeskin, eventually developing a hypoallergenic, powder-free latex glove. The company was named Forbes ?Best Small Company in America? in 1996, and later sold to Kimberly-Clark.

Jaffe currently serves on the board of Safe Life Corporation, a medical technology company, and lives in California with his wife and three children. One of his favorite quotations is, ?Do today what feels good tomorrow.? In one of his poems, ?Eternal Happiness,? Jaffe?s life motto is summed up:

?But a happiness with one?s own true self,

Not an easy bond to make,

Allows our heart to pour out love

Without the need to take.?

Egyptians riot after soccer fans sentenced to die

CAIRO (AP) ? Relatives and angry young men rampaged through the Egyptian city of Port Said on Saturday in assaults that killed at least 27 people following death sentences for local fans involved in the country's worst bout of soccer violence.

Unrest surrounding the second anniversary of Egypt's revolution also broke out in Cairo and other cities for a third day, with protesters clashing for hours with riot police who fired tear gas that encompassed swaths of the capital's downtown.

The divisive verdict and bloodshed highlight challenges being faced by President Mohammed Morsi, who took office seven months ago following an Egyptian revolution that ousted autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak. Critics say Morsi has failed to carry out promised reforms in the country's judiciary and police force, and claim little has improved in the two years after the uprising against Mubarak.

The Islamist leader, Egypt's first freely elected and civilian president, met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly formed National Defense Council to discuss the deployment of troops in two cities. The military was deployed to Port Said hours after the verdict was announced, and warned that a curfew could be declared in areas of unrest. The military was also deployed to the canal city of Suez, where protesters attacked the main security compound there after eight people were killed late Friday.

Saturday's riot in Port Said stemmed from animosity between police and die-hard soccer fans know as Ultras, who also were part of the mass uprising against Mubarak that began on Jan. 25, 2011, and at forefront of protests against the military rulers who assumed temporary power after his ouster.

It also reflected tensions after the uprising that reached into all sectors of Egyptian life, even sports.

Survivors and witnesses said Mubarak loyalists had a hand in instigating last year's attack, which began Feb. 1 after Port Said's home team Al-Masry won a match, 3-1, against Cairo's Al-Ahly. Some say "hired thugs" wearing green T-shirts posing as Al-Masry fans led the attacks.

Others say, at the very least, police were responsible for gross negligence in the Feb. 1 soccer brawl that killed 74 Al-Ahly fans.

Anger at police was evident in Port Said, home to most of the 73 men accused of involvement in the bloodshed, although the trial was held outside Cairo.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he handed down the sentences for 21 defendants. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

Verdicts for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, are scheduled to be delivered March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers. All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

Supporters of those sentenced to death said they were being used as scapegoats. The rioters attacked the city's prison after the verdict was read live on state television to try and free the defendants. A police lieutenant and police officer were killed in the assault.

Residents also focused their anger against the government, attacking a power station, the governor's office and local courthouse. They staged a sit-in along the main road leading into the city and occupied a police station.

Security officials said a total of 27 people were killed and some 400 wounded, many by gunfire, throughout the city. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

Victims were killed when police fired tear gas, bird shot and other live ammunition at the mob. Two soccer players who died? one from Port Said's Al-Marikh club and the other a former player of its Al-Masry club ? apparently were killed on their way to do training near the prison. One of the players was shot three times, a local health official said.

Some 220 kilometers (135 miles) away in Cairo, the divisive nature of the trial was on display.

Relatives of those killed at the soccer game erupted in joy in the courtroom after the verdict was announced.

Families yelled "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for "God is great" and pumped their fists in the air. Others held up pictures of the deceased, most of whom were young men from Cairo's poor neighborhoods. One man fainted while others hugged. The judge smacked the bench several times to try to restore calm.

Supporters of Cairo's Al-Ahly celebrated the verdict in the team's club before heading toward Interior Ministry headquarters, which manages the police, for more protests.

Lawmakers had formed a fact-finding committee that found some evidence toward collusion from authorities, but the evidence was not conclusive.

Nine of those on trial are security officials, charged with assisting the attackers for failing to search for weapons as is customary and allowing known criminals to attend the game. One was a senior officer who locked the exit designated for Al-Ahly fans. Many victims suffocated or were trampled to death in the corridor trying to escape the violence. Others were thrown off bleachers, undressed, beaten with iron bars and had the words "Port Said" carved into their skin.

Police reform researcher Karim Ennarah said the lack of a proper investigation raises the specter that some of those on trial are innocent. The state prosecutor's office, tasked with investigating the case, was long run by a Mubarak holdover.

"We still operate in a state that doesn't hold its employees, specifically in the security sector, to account," Ennarah said. "There might have been democratic elections, but it still is a very undemocratic state in terms of how police work."

The most high profile case since Egypt's uprising was that of Mubarak himself. He was found guilty of failing to stop the killing of around 900 protesters. The verdict angered people who wanted him executed on charges of ordering deadly force. He was sentenced to life in prison in what even some of his opponents argue was a verdict based on flimsy evidence aimed at appeasing an angry public.

A lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence Saturday said this verdict too was political.

Days before the verdict, Morsi declared the victims "martyrs of the revolution", granting families up to $15,000 in compensation.

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

The president, once a detainee under Mubarak for his political activities with the Brotherhood, had vowed to restore security in his first 100 days in office. Instead, critics say he has waged a personal campaign against anti-Brotherhood figures rather than carry out comprehensive reform.

His Muslim Brotherhood allies blamed "misleading" media outlets for enflaming the public against the government. The main opposition bloc said it holds Morsi responsible for "the excessive use of force by the security forces against protesters."

Fans of Al-Ahly, mostly young men in their teens, promised more violence in the days leading up to the verdict if the death penalty was not handed down. Their main Facebook page had called for bloodshed.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17-year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in last year's melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

"We are not really that happy," Mohamed Ahmed, a survivor of the attack, said. "The government helped the Ultras of Port Said by blocking the gates of the stadium until people suffocated to death."

Meanwhile, Port Said resident and activist Rasha Hammouda said the city wants those involved in killings to be brought to justice.

"We have no problem with execution of those who killed, but bring everyone who is involved," she said.

Clegg slams EU vote, polls show boost for PM

LONDON (Reuters) - Nick Clegg, leader of the junior party in the ruling coalition, denounced David Cameron's pledge to hold a referendum on quitting the European Union, as polls on Sunday indicated the prime minister's move may gain him votes.

"It is not in the national interest when we have this fragile recovery," said Clegg, whose Lib Dems strongly favour closer EU ties, in contrast to many members of Cameron's Conservative party. "I don't think it helps at all."

He dismissed as "implausible" Cameron's plan to take back powers from Brussels before a referendum on a new treaty by 2017 that would let voters take Britain out. EU leaders have shown little wish to grant Cameron concessions and Clegg said EU talks would distract ministers from efforts to revive the economy.

Cameron, he told the BBC, would damage economic growth if he spent "years flying around from one European capital to the next, fiddling around with the terms of Britain's membership".

The Lib Dems are languishing in the polls and are unlikely to leave the coalition before an election in 2015, but the EU issue has added to strains. Cameron, who says he wants Britain to stay in the EU, last week promised a referendum if he is re-elected. It is less clear what may happen if treaties remain unchanged.

The first opinion polls published since he made his pledge of an "in-out" vote, however, showed that the prime minister may be succeeding in reversing a drift from the Conservatives to a party which campaigns for Britain to leave the European Union.

A Survation poll in the Mail on Sunday, which showed Labour unchanged and in the lead on 38 percent, put the Conservatives on 31 percent, up two points, while the UK Independence Party was down by the same margin, on 14 percent. UKIP's surge from just 3 percent in the 2010 election has raised the prospect of a split on the right that could condemn Cameron to defeat.

Another poll, by ComRes in the Independent on Sunday, showed an even more marked "Brussels bounce" for the prime minister, with the Conservatives gaining five points from last month to 33 percent and UKIP losing four points to be on 10 percent. Again, ComRes put Labour in the lead, down a point on 39 percent.

Cameron's European move worries the United States and EU allies, which want Britain to stay in the bloc. Many business leaders say it creates dangerous uncertainty.

Many Conservatives, whose party toppled previous premiers over European policy, welcomed a referendum after 2015. However, without improvement in an economy which shrank by 0.3 percent in the last quarter, Cameron's re-election is far from certain.

PFT: Chiefs add ex-Eagle Harris to coaching staff

AL Harris vs. SeaAP

Longtime NFL cornerback Al Harris has a new job: The Chiefs have announced that Harris is their new secondary coach.

Harris played cornerback for new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid for four years in Philadelphia, and Reid obviously thinks Harris can teach younger players some things about the position.

?Al?s playing experience over 15 years will bring a unique perspective for our players,? Reid said in a statement.

Harris was drafted by the Buccaneers in 1997 but was cut before ever playing in a regular-season game for Tampa Bay. He later played for the Eagles from 1998 to 2002, the Packers from 2003 to 2009, the Dolphins in 2010 and the Rams in 2011. He spent 2012 as a coaching intern for the Dolphins.

The Chiefs also announced that Mark DeLeone has been hired as a quality control coach and Brent Salazar has been hired as assistant strength & conditioning coach.

Ravens' Caldwell still longs to be head coach

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Jim Caldwell enjoys his job as offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, and he's quite good at it.

Before taking over in early December Caldwell had never held the position at any level ? yet the Ravens' attack has flourished under his direction. Quarterback Joe Flacco has looked sharp, the play-calling has been unpredictable and Baltimore has scored 90 points in three playoff games to earn a berth in the Super Bowl.

Caldwell's success prompted head coach John Harbaugh to ask him to retain the post in 2013. Caldwell appreciates the opportunity, but has no intention of making "Offensive Coordinator, Baltimore Ravens" the last line on his resume.

The 58-year-old Caldwell wants to be a head coach. He did it in Indianapolis from 2009-11, and is itching for another crack at the top job in his profession.

"At some point in time, if the Lord wills it, I'd love to be able to do it again," Caldwell said Friday. "But it may not happen. Everybody in our profession is looking for an opportunity to run their own program, and I'm no different than anybody else in that regard."

Caldwell might have gotten the chance to at least interview for an opening if he wasn't so busy helping the Ravens earn a date with San Francisco in the Super Bowl next Sunday.

"I had a couple of GMs tell me, 'If it weren't for your guys' success in the playoffs and continuing to play, then he would have been someone we would have interviewed," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "Hopefully next year we're in the same spot, and it will be tough for him to get interviews again. Really, though, I can see him getting that opportunity a year from now."

Caldwell certainly is a viable candidate for a head coaching job. He took the Colts to the Super Bowl in 2009 and was instrumental in the development of quarterback Peyton Manning. He's also provided the Baltimore offense with a boost after replacing the fired Cam Cameron on Dec. 10.

Some coaches are fiery. Some break clipboards to get a player's attention. Caldwell does none of that.

"Man, he is so humble, laid back," Baltimore receiver Jacoby Jones said. "But he's a smart man. He reads a lot of books, gives you a lot of quotes. He's so diverse."

The NFL's Rooney Rule was designed to provide diversity among NFL head coaches and GMs, but if Caldwell ? an African American with impressive credentials ? can't get an interview, then maybe it's time to fix the process.

"I do think that it's something that certainly needs to be revisited, and is going to be revisited," Caldwell said. "I'm not one of the individuals that started that particular drive to do so. There's been a lot of very intelligent men that have looked at this thing and talked about it in depth, so I think that's going to happen.

In the meantime, Caldwell is preparing for the Super Bowl while dozens of other coaches are at home looking forward to next year. So, despite not getting an interview, he has no regrets.

"None whatsoever. I'd certainly rather be right where I am right now, with you asking me this question," he said. "It just doesn't happen that often in your career to be fortunate enough to have this opportunity. I'm thankful. The other things, they'll take care of themselves somewhere down the road."

Caldwell deserves plenty of credit for Baltimore's surprising run to the Super Bowl. In the six games since he's taken over, the Ravens have averaged 26.2 points and 406.2 yards of offense. During the playoffs, Baltimore has scored touchdowns on eight of 10 trips inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

"What coach Caldwell has done has kept the offense simple and basic," running back Ray Rice said. "He put the game into Joe Flacco's hands, and Joe has done a great job ? phenomenal job ? of leading us to where we needed to be. We are right here where we want to be right now."

And maybe, so is Caldwell. For now, anyway. He expressed genuine appreciation and thanks Friday when talking about being asked to return in 2013.

"I'm excited about it. Certainly very honored and humbled as well," he said. "It's a great opportunity for me, in particular working within this organization. I'm looking forward to it, but right now I'm looking forward to this next ball game we've got coming up. That's the most important thing."

Ensure Harmonious Relationships With Daily Zodiac Compatibility

Daily zodiac compatibility tools are a great resource for ensuring harmonious personal and professional relationships. A lot, of course, depends on the interpretative skills and experience of the astrologer you consult. Scientific, authoritative astrological compatibility updates have helped hundreds of people achieve the most productive and happy relationships with the key members in their life.

How Zodiac Compatibility Reports Work

Astrological or zodiac compatibility reports are compiled using a definite system that distills hundreds of years of hard-won facts and techniques. Most authoritative astrologers in the western tradition use any one among two techniques - the Synastry method or the Composite technique.

The Synastry technique consists of comparing the positions of the houses, planets, and certain key points in the charts belonging to the two individuals whose compatibility needs to be tested. The composite method, on the other hand, works by identifying the midpoints between each major planet in the natal charts of the partners or individuals concerned to cast a whole new relationship chart.

But this is only in the western astrological tradition. Each ancient astrological system has its own particular techniques for identifying compatibility ratings. Many astrologers, belonging to both the eastern and western traditions, prefer to use numerology for such consultations. Regardless of the method used, the validity of these charts has been proven beyond dispute in hundreds of real life partnerships.

Using a Daily Zodiac Compatibility Tool

Daily compatibility updates can be useful in a variety of ways. If you are in a relationship, these updates can help you identify potential problems well in advance. This allows partners to be prepared for troubled times in relationships, making things easier to handle. Compatibility updates will also give you a heads up on when any extra TLC may come in handy. For example, if the report shows that the relationship with your partner may start getting strained soon, investing in some couple time or extra patience can help you weather the storm.

Compatibility reports can also help with other key relationships in your life with parents, with children, and with bosses or colleagues. Many parents are able to understand their children better after reading and understanding a compatibility report. Similarly, you will be able to plan the best time to approach your boss about a raise or a key promotion by consulting these astrology charts.

Make the most of your life with daily zodiac compatibility tools.

Digestive juices implicated in shock

Enzymes may leak outside intestines and cause deadly condition

By Nathan Seppa

Web edition: January 23, 2013

Digestive enzymes that escape from the intestines into adjacent tissues and the bloodstream may be a key player in triggering shock, the dangerous condition that sometimes occurs after major medical trauma. A new study finds that giving enzyme inhibitors to rats in the throes of shock can alleviate the potentially lethal condition.

The findings could shed some much needed light on shock, which typically shows up as the end result of some other medical problem such as hemorrhage, sepsis, a heart attack or a systemic allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. In all cases, blood pressure plummets, sabotaging circulation and threatening tissue viability.

The new study, in the Jan. 23 Science Translational Medicine, suggests that digestive enzymes play a role in this crisis. The enzymes normally help break down food, but they need to be confined to the ducts in the pancreas, where they are made, or the small intestine, where they digest food. If not, the enzymes can digest a person?s own tissue.

A mucosal lining in the intestines keeps the enzymes from escaping the gastrointestinal tract and from damaging the intestines themselves. But hemorrhage, sepsis and other conditions disrupt blood flow to the intestinal wall and hinder maintenance of this barrier, says Geert Schmid-Sch?nbein, a bioengineer at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla. If digestive enzymes stray into the rest of the body, he hypothesizes, they could damage vital organs and trigger massive inflammation.

Schmid-Sch?nbein and his colleagues tested this scenario by inducing shock in rats through blood loss, with bacterial endotoxin poisoning in the intestines to replicate sepsis, and by infecting the peritoneum ? the space around the intestines ? with fecal matter to mimic intestinal leakage, as might happen with trauma. All three models led to a breakdown of the mucosal barrier in the intestines of the rats, unleashing digestive enzymes into intestinal tissues, the bloodstream and beyond, Schmid-Sch?nbein says.

One hour after the shock-inducing procedures, some rats were treated with enzyme blockers injected into the small intestine and, in some, the peritoneum. Over three months, most of these treated rats survived, whereas most of the untreated rats with shock died of heart or respiratory failure. The treated rats also showed less intestinal damage, indicating limited barrier breakdown.

?This is a very intriguing approach,? says Asrar Malik, a pharmacologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. ?It?s very inclusive, covering three models of experimental shock.?

The new study should set the stage for tests in larger mammals, Malik says, and if successful, in people ? especially patients with sepsis, a leading cause of death for people in intensive care units. Sepsis is a whole-body inflammatory state typically brought on by bacterial endotoxins. Fatality rates range from 20 to 35 percent, and the death risk rises if a patient goes into shock.

?This is relevant to future treatment of that disease,? Malik says. ?The treatment possibilities are there.? Enzyme blockers called protease inhibitors are already approved to fight HIV.

There is an anecdotal precedent for treating shock with enzyme blockers. In 2010, an emergency course of enzyme inhibitors apparently rescued a patient who had developed sepsis and gone into shock, Schmid-Sch?nbein says. He was in Taiwan delivering a lecture and got a call later that day about the patient. The man had received a successful heart transplant four years earlier but was dangerously ill with septic shock unrelated to the transplant. Doctors gave him a course of enzyme inhibitors and, after other treatment that included intestinal surgery, he recovered, researchers reported in Transplantation Proceedings in 2012. ?The guy is now walking around Taipei,? Schmid-Sch?nbein says.

Becoming Martha: 3-in-1 Toolbox Craft Supplies Organizer

Can you believe we're halfway through January already? ?How are those New Years Resolutions coming along? ?This year, I made the two most common New Years Resolutions ever made - to eat healthier and become more organized. ?One thing that really needed organizing was my craft stash. ?Last year, I created a crafting "room" for myself out of the closet in our guest bedroom, but I am somewhat of a "crafting gypsy". I like to craft in different rooms (i.e. tv room), and I like to go to craft nights - which results in me filling up bags of stuff that I never end up putting away.?In the summer time, we spend most of our time at the family cottage, where I have no crafting supplies. ?I was desperate for some sort of "portable" crafting organizer. When I was presented with the opportunity to review a product from Trinity's line of storage solutions, I saw this 3-in-1 rolling toolbox and a?light bulb?went off. ?This could be the storage solution I need. ?Let me tell you, it came a few days ago, and I am in love! ?(So is my husband, by the way - he is already plotting to steal it for his tools.)? This is not your ordinary toolbox. It is a super sleek stainless steel, and it has three?compartments that seperate - so I can carry just one part if its to a small craft night, or the whole thing to the cottage for the week. ?There is so much storage room in this bad boy, and along with being super sturdy, the wheels and telescoping handle make it so easy to?manoeuvre?around.

The bottom compartment is an open space. I filled it with felt, tulle, and 12x12 scrapbook paper. I put a cardboard box in the bottom to make sure it stayed standing instead of flopping over. ?(If you are a sewer - my sewing machine fit in here as well. How cool would this be as a mobile sewing station?!)

The middle compartment is two drawers. ?I used one for my basic supplies like scissors, punches, glue, and tape. ?The second drawer I used for my stamping supplies. Little drawer organizers work like a charm in these drawers too ? so I score bonus points there towards towards my organizing resolution!

The top is laid out with a tray and a bottom compartment. ?I used the tray (yes, the entire tray) for a selection of my glitter and glitter glue. ?Underneath, ?I put a selection of general craft supplies - paint, ribbon, embellishments, twine, fishing line, and bakers twine samples.

Super cute right? I couldn't possibly love it more. And right now, Trinity is offering all of my readers a 15% discount on any purchases made by February 17 (use code CLEVER0113). And here's a bonus, they always offer free shipping ? so you can have your own portable craft room and achieve your organization resolutions for a steal!

*Note: I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Is Facebook envy making you miserable?

LONDON (Reuters) - Witnessing friends' vacations, love lives and work successes on Facebook can cause envy and trigger feelings of misery and loneliness, according to German researchers.

A study conducted jointly by two German universities found rampant envy on Facebook, the world's largest social network that now has over one billion users and has produced an unprecedented platform for social comparison.

The researchers found that one in three people felt worse after visiting the site and more dissatisfied with their lives, while people who browsed without contributing were affected the most.

"We were surprised by how many people have a negative experience from Facebook with envy leaving them feeling lonely, frustrated or angry," researcher Hanna Krasnova from the Institute of Information Systems at Berlin's Humboldt University told Reuters.

"From our observations some of these people will then leave Facebook or at least reduce their use of the site," said Krasnova, adding to speculation that Facebook could be reaching saturation point in some markets.

Researchers from Humboldt University and from Darmstadt's Technical University found vacation photos were the biggest cause of resentment with more than half of envy incidents triggered by holiday snaps on Facebook.

Social interaction was the second most common cause of envy as users could compare how many birthday greetings they received to those of their Facebook friends and how many "likes" or comments were made on photos and postings.

"Passive following triggers invidious emotions, with users mainly envying happiness of others, the way others spend their vacations and socialize," the researchers said in the report "Envy on Facebook: A Hidden Threat to Users' Life Satisfaction?" released on Tuesday.

"The spread and ubiquitous presence of envy on Social Networking Sites is shown to undermine users' life satisfaction."

They found people aged in their mid-30s were most likely to envy family happiness while women were more likely to envy physical attractiveness.

These feelings of envy were found to prompt some users to boast more about their achievements on the site run by Facebook Inc. to portray themselves in a better light.

Men were shown to post more self-promotional content on Facebook to let people know about their accomplishments while women stressed their good looks and social lives.

The researchers based their findings on two studies involving 600 people with the results to be presented at a conference on information systems in Germany in February.

The first study looked at the scale, scope and nature of envy incidents triggered by Facebook and the second at how envy was linked to passive use of Facebook and life satisfaction.

The researchers said the respondents in both studies were German but they expected the findings to hold internationally as envy is a universal feeling and possibly impact Facebook usage.

"From a provider's perspective, our findings signal that users frequently perceive Facebook as a stressful environment, which may, in the long-run, endanger platform sustainability," the researchers concluded.

Seniors in Our Midst: A Guide to Eldercare in the Tetons | Teton ...

The Tetons are an incredible place to live out your youth, and they are a wonderful place to grow old. While our elders may not be the most visible or vocal members of our community, they have provided a backbone of support for decades. Families may scatter for much of their members? lives, but they are often drawn together later by choice and/or necessity. As neighbors and family members age, they remain vitally important, and should always be included in our thoughts and activities.

The eldest generation gathered here for several reasons. Some are pioneers or their first-generation descendants, who were born and remained here to witness the transformation of the rugged, rural land. Another large segment of the demographic ventured to the region decades ago as young adults and stayed to build careers, homes, and families. There are also newer, younger residents who have brought their parents or grandparents here from other places to live out their days in this vibrant and beautiful environment.

In Teton County, Wyoming, 9.9 percent of the population, or approximately 2,100 people, are older than sixty-five. According to Ruby Parsons?a founding board member of the Seniors West of the Tetons Senior Center in Driggs?Teton County, Idaho, is home to about five hundred citizens over sixty years old. Available resources for elders have grown as their numbers have increased; opportunities for seniors to get out of their homes and retain vital social relationships abound through local hospitals, church groups, and care agencies. For those more frail and homebound, the network of caregivers, homecare, and hospice services grows ever larger to assist both the elderly and their families.

The Senior Center of Jackson Hole, located at 830 East Hanson, has provided services to 1,315 people so far this year; they served nineteen thousand senior meals in 2011, including three routes of home-delivered meals. The center provides educational and fun activities ranging from fitness classes like yoga, Qigong, and Zumba to Spanish classes, Bible study, pinochle, bridge, cribbage, and bingo. Health-related sessions include blood pressure checks, Medicare assistance, and foot clinics with a podiatrist.

The center hosts two separate caregiver-support groups each month facilitated by professional counselors. They have an equipment closet stocked with walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, shower chairs, and benches to loan. The center mails out more than nine hundred newsletters each month, and a bus is available for pick up and delivery to the center, with assistance available from door to door. For a small fee, the bus is available for shopping and other errands.

Across the street from the Senior Center is Pioneer Homestead Apartments. The three buildings here include seventy-eight units for people sixty-two or older and of limited income, or the disabled of any age. Residents live independently, and the facility honors the federal Grandparents Raising Children program, which means family members may not be denied residence. Companion pets?cats and small dogs?as well as working dogs for the disabled are allowed. About half of the residents have animals. Some additional benefits include laundry facilities on every floor, and a library with books, games, and puzzles. About 60 percent of those living here have moved in from out of the area to be with their children and families, and the waiting list for the apartments remains at about twenty names. Many residents stay for as long as fifteen years.

?These people have much to give,? says Deborah Barnes, property manager at Pioneer Homestead Apartments. ?They are deep wells and [too often] no one draws from them. Our job is making a difference in folks? lives. I think more people need to volunteer to visit with elders. It helps turn people?s heads around.?

Barnes speaks from experience. Most of her career was spent as a child psychologist. And when her nephew was rebellious, having difficulties with relationships and school, her sister had him volunteer to help the elderly in their community. Barnes saw firsthand her nephew?s dramatic transformation to becoming more adaptive and tolerant.

River Rock Assisted Living Facility south of Jackson is another, more opulent option for independent living. The beautiful facility, run by the Oxford Group of Kansas, offers full meal service, housekeeping and maintenance, scheduled transportation, paid utilities, an emergency call system, and group activities. Trained staff, including medical professionals, is available for monitoring and assistance with medications, medical appointments, and personal care such as bathing and dressing.
St. John?s Living Center is a long-term care, skilled-nursing facility connected to the hospital in Jackson. However fragile it may sometimes be, life abounds here. In the Eden Alternative facility a large aviary of colorful finches greets visitors. Three cats reside among the residents. The sixty-bed facility is truly a community within a community, with an average of 10 percent of residents there for rehabilitation and short-term respite care.

?It?s a pretty dynamic place with lots of coming and going,? says administrator Pat Weber. ?We keep moving toward our goal of being resident-centered. Relationships are based on two-way communication. There are three registered nurses and eight certified nursing assistants every day. The staff truly cares.?

Activities include popcorn parties, Sunday services, and a music teacher with guitar that entertains and interacts with residents and their families. Residents find joy in visits with the children from St. John?s Medical Center on-site daycare who come every Monday. The kids grow comfortable around seniors and don?t fear wheelchairs or wrinkled faces. Residents are invited to employee picnics and Karen Connelly, Director of Marketing for St. John?s, was surprised when her young daughter said, ?Oh, there is my friend, I have to go say hello,? and walked right over to greet a frail woman in a wheelchair.
On staff at the Living Center is a social worker that addresses such issues as medications management, safety, nutrition, and preventive health care. Public Health Nursing provides annual flu shots and visits with an audiologist. It is important to acknowledge grieving for the loss of pets, friends, driving ability, and mental and physical capacities in general, and there is guidance for those dealing with the changing roles of parents and their children.

On the Idaho side of Teton Pass, the Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership sponsors the Area VI Agency on Aging, which offers resources for seniors including adult protection and caregiver support; various health, financial, and legal services; participation in the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program; and in-home services to ensure seniors are able to stay in their homes. District VII Public Health Nursing?s services range from legal aid and low-income energy assistance to home care and advocacy programs. Avalon Home Health and Hospice provides health care to seniors in Teton Valley who are unable to leave their home. A nurse can do an initial assessment and help with insurance coverage (100 percent covered by Medicare, others vary) and local caregivers with reliable transportation are assigned to clients. And Teton Valley Health Care provides care and screenings, including services for those in need of financial assistance, through the hospital and clinic in Driggs as well as a smaller clinic in Victor.

After going years without, Teton Valley welcomes the Teton Peaks Assisted Living facility set to open January 2013. The sixteen-bed facility located just north of Driggs offers independent living with twenty-four-hour nurse oversight for folks ready to turn over the keys to their own home. They provide meals, medication reminders, and shower assistance, and have partnered with Avalon Home Health and Hospice for medical caregivers.

Seniors West of the Tetons Senior Center serves lunch to anywhere from thirty to sixty on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday each week (but it?s closed for holidays). They feature Pie Day and Bingo on Tuesdays. The center has a Fit & Fall-Proof exercise session led by a therapist on Mondays and Thursdays at 9:00 am. Sponsored by Eagle Orthopedics and Sports Physical Therapy, this multi-level class is free and open to the public. Blood pressure checks are available on Mondays. Each month the center hosts a speaker presentation called Women of Teton Valley; an additional gathering honors one local citizen each month.
One final regional resource of stellar quality is the Institute for Cognitive Health at St. John?s Medical Center. An affiliate of the University of Utah Center for Alzheimer?s Care, Imaging, and Research, the Institute provides screenings and neuropsychological assessment and directs a continuum of care for those with memory impairment. It offers educational seminars on healthy aging, and maintains a lending library. Three support groups that meet monthly offer guidance for those dealing with the isolation involved in caring for loved ones suffering from mental decline. Each October the institute takes part in National Memory Screening Day.

Every November the Institute for Cognitive Health teams up with the Senior Center of Jackson Hole to host the Brain Game Challenge sponsored by the Alzheimer?s Foundation of America. For this event, the Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department and local high school Honor Society students work together to create diverse activities, including a Language Learning Lab in four languages, a Zumba movement class, and lots of puzzles and games. It?s a time for people of all ages to come together, and there is plenty of food and fun for everyone.

There is a sweetness to be shared hanging out with old folks. It is amazing the unexpected things one might learn, or the glimpses of the past one might see, provided by someone who was there. My grandmother, who was born in 1891 and grew up ?back East,? once shared a bit of personal history while she was looking at pictures in a bird book with some visiting children: ?I remember the first time I ever saw a ring-necked pheasant.?
?Really?? the children asked. ?Haven?t they always been here??

?No, they were imported from Korea about the turn of the twentieth century. My dad was sitting with us kids on the porch. Our mother was dying of cancer,? she continued. ?A beautiful pheasant walked out of the cornfield into the yard. Father told us to sit perfectly still while he went inside to carry Mother out to see that marvelous bird.?
