2013 Archives Summer Internships

The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas awards three paid archival internships each year to students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Archives, Library Science, Museum Studies, Political Science or History.

Under the supervision of the Senior Archivist, Archivist, Digital Archivist, and the Education and Interpretation Specialist, interns will engage in team and individual projects focused on professional archival activities including acquisition, appraisal, arrangement and description of archival collections; reference services; and exhibit development. While contributing to the work of the institution student interns will gain career-relevant archival experience.

Interns will work primarily with the Dole papers, photographs, and three-dimensional collection. The internship will expose interns to all aspects of archival processing while concentrating on a few specific projects. Interns will work alongside student assistants and staff members.

Depending upon the successful candidate?s skills and interest, the intern may also help develop educational programming for the archive.

10% Arranging and describing new accessions to the archive
10% Creating inventories and finding aids of materials
10% Processing and documenting materials according to standards adopted in the archive
10% Entering data onto datasheets and into databases
10% Researching, designing and preparing small exhibits
10% Digitizing photographs, press releases and other documents
10% Preparing oral histories and other reference material for the Dole Archive website
10% Assisting researchers in the research room
10% Assisting with tours of the Archive
10% Providing administrative and organizational support (e.g., copying tapes, labeling tapes and files, photocopying) and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
1. Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate program in Archives, Library Science, Museum Studies, Political Science, History or Education.
2. Strong written communication skills as demonstrated by education and/or work experience.
3. Experience interacting with the public professionally as demonstrated by education and/or work experience.
4. Experience working independently as demonstrated by education and/or work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of the Dole Institute and its mission through work as a volunteer or frequent attendance of programs.
2. Students with graduate or undergraduate coursework in American political history.
3. Experience developing educational public programming.
4. Experience working with large photograph collections.

Work Schedule:
Ten-week position for 350 hours (35 hours per week), during the time period beginning May 13, 2013, and ending August 23, 2013.
Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Standard Hours Per Week: 35 hours

Pay: $10.00/hour
