In recent decades, the sight of urban sprawl and abandoned downtown areas have demonstrated that planning is probably a better way to create a sustainable city than letting a metro area grow without guidance.
But what counts as city improvements? Some people may want better public transportation while others may want a cleaner environment. A third group might long for urban hiking trails.
Green initiatives aren?t just cosmetic improvements or trendy attempts to jump on the green bandwagon. Most green initiatives make cities more livable. Cities that invest in cleaner, more efficient energy sources save money. Encouraging neighborhood gardens and farmers? markets increases a sense of community in an urban area. Parks and green spaces break up the monotony of buildings and concrete as well as giving residents spaces for exercise and recreation. And cities copy one another; when other cities see what works well in one place, they?ll want to adopt those same improvements for themselves.
