The Portland Trail Blazers have hired Chris McGowan to serve as president and CEO, replacing Larry Miller.
The Portland Trail Blazers announced Monday the hiring of Chris McGowan as president and CEO. He replaces former president Larry Miller, who resigned in July and returned to Nike's Brand Jordan.
The Blazers also announced the resignation of general counsel Mike Fennell on Monday.

The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that Los Angeles sports executive Chris McGowan will be the Trail Blazers' new President and Chief Executive Officer. McGowan joins the Trail Blazers from his position as Chief Operating Officer of AEG Sports, where he has played prominent leadership roles in the reigning NHL champion Los Angeles Kings and the MLS' Los Angeles Galaxy.
"It is a great day for the Portland Trail Blazers as we welcome Chris to the Northwest," said Trail Blazers Owner Paul Allen. "With his demonstrated leadership with the Kings and Galaxy, I am confident he will find ways to improve the Blazers' business performance, which is key to the team's overall success."
McGowan replaces Larry Miller, who resigned as the team's president in July to return to Nike, and joins General Manager Neil Olshey and Head Coach Terry Stotts, who were both hired earlier this year. He will assume his new position on November 12.
"With Chris now onboard, the Blazers' new leadership team is complete," Allen said.
"I am honored to take on this role," said McGowan. "I have always admired the strength of the Trail Blazers' brand and the passion of their fan base and am eager to join the staff as we continue building an organization the city can be proud of."
McGowan will manage all business operations of the team and the Rose Garden. He will report to Peter McLoughlin, currently president of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and MLS' Seattle Sounders FC, who is assuming the role of CEO of Vulcan Sports and Entertainment (VSE). VSE oversees the business operations of Allen's sports franchises and facilities. McLoughlin will continue in his roles with the Seattle franchises as well as with First and Goal, Inc., which manages CenturyLink Field.
Olshey will continue to manage all basketball operations. He will report directly to Allen on basketball operations and collaborate with McGowan on budget and financial matters.
"I'm excited to work with Chris," said Olshey. "I'm impressed with his leadership abilities and look forward to a successful collaborative effort."
McGowan earned his degree in International Relations from the University of Delaware and began his career with AEG in 1996. His success in sales and his strong organizational and team-building skills propelled him up the ranks of AEG. In 2007, he was named Chief Operating Officer of the Kings, where he oversaw the team's business operations and led the team to increased revenue from ticketing, sponsorships, concessions and other areas.
Earlier this year, McGowan was named COO of the newly formed sports division, AEG Sports. In addition to overseeing the Kings and the Los Angeles Galaxy, McGowan assisted with the operations for all of AEG's sports teams around the world.

The multi-billion dollar insurance losses from Hurricane Sandy could be larger than anyone expected before the massive storm blew ashore. It may take weeks to assess the damage from widespread flooding and destruction in the east. More than ten states have been directly affected. The National Flood Insurance Program will step in to pay for some of the damage. Preliminary estimates are that Sandy will be a lot more expensive than last year's Hurricane Irene, which according to one finding cost nearly $16 billion. The worst damage came from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It cost $108 billion and caused 1,200 deaths.
Stock trading is closed for a second straight day. Bond trading will also be closed. It is the first time since 1888 that the exchange will have been closed for two consecutive days because of weather.
Transportation is at a standstill in the Northeast. Airlines grounded thousands more flights today, stranding travelers as far away as Europe and Asia. Amtrak says it's canceled all service today in the Northeast because of high winds and heavy rains. Many large companies have postponed the release of their quarterly earnings reports. Before the approach of Hurricane Sandy the Conference Board delayed the release of its October Consumer Confidence survey. The Labor Department says it still plans to release the monthly jobs survey on Friday. That will be the last employment report before next week's election.
Japanese cars are still the most reliable brands on the road, according to Consumer Reports. Toyota's Scion, Lexus and Toyota brands took the top three spots and the Toyota Prius C, a subcompact hybrid, got the best overall score in the magazine's annual reliability survey. Mazda, Subaru, Honda and Acura were close behind. The rankings attempt to predict the reliability of 2013 model-year vehicles based on surveys of Consumer Reports' readers. This year, 800,000 people submitted information on 1.2 million vehicles from the 2010 to 2012 model years.
The rankings are important for auto companies, since Americans frequently cite Consumer Reports as a main source of car-buying advice. Ford and Lincoln, once top performers, plummeted to the bottom of this year's rankings because of persistent problems with touch screens and bumpy transmissions. Ford was also hurt because three normally reliable models - the Ford Escape, Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ - are all new for 2013, so Consumer Reports couldn't predict their reliability. Also near the bottom were Chrysler Group's Chrysler, Dodge and Ram brands, which have been getting a fast makeover since partnering with Italy's Fiat three years ago. Consumer Reports says models with more features and more powerful engines, like the V-8 versions of the Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee - had the most issues. The best-performing U.S. brand was Cadillac, from General Motors.

Are you among the five million monthly visitors who have been smitten by the appealingly homey recipes on Deb Perelman's Smitten Kitchen website? If you're wondering why you should spring for her cookbook?when you can access hundreds more of her recipes online, complete with enticing photographs and reams of reader commentary, the answer is editing: What we have here is a carefully curated mix of mainly exclusive new recipes plus a few previously posted winners. The result is that wonderfully high IQ.
Although her photographs are mouth-watering, this is not food porn. Perelman, a self-taught cook and photographer, aims at getting you cooking, not just gawking. She's a self-described picky eater and obsessive, and everything she publishes must pass this test: "Will this recipe be really, truly worth it?"
Like the best television cooking show hosts ? could that be next for her? ? Perelman projects an inviting warmth and chattiness. She's funny ? "The squares keep at room temperature for at least a week, although never in my apartment" ? and self-deprecating enough to ease your culinary insecurities.
She invites us into her household, with pictures of her toddler son sprinkled throughout: "Welcome. Welcome to my tiny kitchen. Wouldn't it be great if we could all fit in here? I'd make us mulled cider and gooey cinnamon squares. We could talk about pie." Alas, her kitchen is too small. But the message is, if she can produce all this bounty in such a shoebox, so can you.
Perelman, like many successful food bloggers ? including the Wednesday Chef, Luisa Weiss, whose memoir with recipes, "My Berlin Kitchen," I reviewed earlier this fall, and Julie Powell of Julie and Julia fame ? quit her day job once her site took off.???
She's upfront about her biases. On her website, she proclaims: "What I'm wary of is: Excessively fussy foods and/or pretentious ingredients. I don't do truffle oil, Himalayan pink salt... or single-origin chocolate." In her book, she confesses to disliking cold soups and fish, but she surmounts both prejudices with a Seared Halibut with Gazpacho Salsa and Tomato Vinaigrette. Halibut, she writes, "is a great gateway fish." It is also wildly expensive, though she says another flaky white fish, such as cod, can be substituted.
A former vegetarian, Perelman offers a bounty of healthful meatless entrees. These include linguine with cauliflower pesto and a rich and hearty mushroom bourgignon she created before she "decided that a life without pulled pork was no longer one I wanted to participate in."
She is also an inventive baker. One innovation involves tweaking lemon or blood orange-olive oil cake by substituting grapefruit. She fills her hamantaschen with rhubarb instead of the more traditional prune or apricot purees.? Her pi?ce de r?sistance is a savory twist on strawberry shortcakes: scallion shortcakes topped with a tomato salad and whipped goat cheese, which in my test came out exactly as pictured on the book jacket, though twice as delicious.
Not all efforts add up. Buttered popcorn cookies follow what she calls "basic snack math, which is that two forms of junk food together always exceed the greatness of them separately, especially when you mix the salty and the sweet." To my taste, this is one where the parts are better than the whole.
Among Perelman's most useful offerings are what I think of as b&b recipes, the sort of prepare-ahead breakfast dishes often served at charming inns. Her delectable winners include Cinnamon Toast French Toast and New York Breakfast Casserole, which features bagels, eggs, onions, tomatoes, and cream cheese baked together.?
One can only imagine the agony of selection that went into this book. I would have opted for a few more recipes like the Rosemary Gruyere and Sea Salt Crisps ("Cheez-Its for grown-ups") in place of such boilerplate tips for stress-free entertaining as prepare ahead, keep it simple, and enlist friends' help. Another misstep involves the book design: While beautiful, it frequently fails to list ingredients and instructions on facing pages, requiring too much awkward page-turning to follow a recipe.
But these are small quibbles about a book filled with practical, crowd-pleasing keepers like her mother's apple cake, featured on her website back in 2008. This is one of many recipes that stays fresh for days ? assuming it lasts that long.

Animals use their noses to focus their sense of smell, much the same way that humans focus their eyes, new research at the University of Chicago shows.
A research team studying rats found that animals adjust their sense of smell through sniffing techniques that bring scents to receptors in different parts of the nose. The sniffing patterns changed according to what kind of substance the rats were attempting to detect.
The sense of smell is particularly important for many animals, as they need it to detect predators and to search out food. "Dogs, for instance, are quite dependent on their sense of smell," said study author Leslie Kay, associate professor of psychology and director of the Institute for Mind & Biology at the University of Chicago.
"But there are many chemicals in the smells they detect, so detecting the one that might be from a predator or an explosive, for instance, is a complex process."

Humans are also known to be able to adjust their ability to detect specific odors with practice when cooking or sampling wine, for instance.
Kay and Rojas-Libano drew from two ideas proposed by other scholars to test whether animals can focus their sniffs.
In one set of findings, researchers had shown that the nose can act like a gas chromatograph (a device that separates chemicals in complex blends like flower scents), absorbing substances for different times depending on how readily they interact with the water-based mucus on the sensory receptors in the nose. Odorants that have high "sorption values" are easily absorbed into the mucus, while odors that do not absorb easily into water have lower sorption values.
The other finding crucial to the current work was the discovery that changes in the airflow rates of scents entering the nose can change which odors the nose readily detects. Different parts of the nose have different airflows, and classes of receptors suited to detecting specific odors. Researchers had speculated that animals might be able to change airflow to target specific odors in a blend of chemicals, like focusing on smelling a particular scent in a perfume.
But until the publication of the paper by Kay and Rojas-Lbano, no one had been able to test the ideas that arose from those earlier findings.
"Daniel devised an excellent experiment to test these hypotheses," Kay explained.
Rojas-Lbano trained rats to detect a specific odor by rewarding them with a sugar pellet when they had detected a target odor and responded correctly. Electrodes attached to the rats' diaphragm muscles measured the rate at which they were taking in air. He then tested the animals with many mixtures of two chemicals to see if they could pick out those containing the target scent.
The rats were successful in making the distinctions, regardless of which type of odor they were seeking. But the rats learned to look for a highly absorbent odor much more quickly than the rats learning to detect a less absorbent odor.
The rats also inhaled differently, depending on which type of odor they were detecting. The animals inhaled for a longer time when they were learning to detect the low-absorbing odor, and then reduced flow rates once they had learned to detect the odor, researchers determined.
"What was happening was that the air was moving through the nose at a slower rate and targeting those parts of the nasal epithelium that are further along in the pathwaythose more likely to pick up the low-absorbent odors," Kay said.
For highly absorbent odors, the animals inhaled more quickly because the parts of the nasal cavity that are sensitive to those smells are closer to the start of the nose's air pathway.
"I think one of the most interesting aspects of these experiments is the finding of the difference in difficulty the rats displayed to detect different targets from the same set of mixtures," Rojas-Lbano said. "This shows that there is more to olfaction than just receptor types and combinations. If detection was solely based on chemical-receptor interactions (as people seem to assume quite often), performance levels should have been more similar between the groups of rats. The physical properties of the odors matter a lot, and so does the type of sniff that an individual uses to smell the odors."

Animals use their noses to focus their sense of smell, much the same way that humans focus their eyes, new research at the University of Chicago shows.
A research team studying rats found that animals adjust their sense of smell through sniffing techniques that bring scents to receptors in different parts of the nose. The sniffing patterns changed according to what kind of substance the rats were attempting to detect.
The sense of smell is particularly important for many animals, as they need it to detect predators and to search out food. "Dogs, for instance, are quite dependent on their sense of smell," said study author Leslie Kay, associate professor of psychology and director of the Institute for Mind & Biology at the University of Chicago.
"But there are many chemicals in the smells they detect, so detecting the one that might be from a predator or an explosive, for instance, is a complex process."

Growing up on a small family farm and being the oldest in a household of six, I learned to cook at a young age and have always eaten relatively ?clean.? Every spring the whole family was put to work preparing the soil and planting the garden which would provide? vegetables for the entire year. I remember my mom working diligently through the summer canning tomatoes, making jams, and freezing green beans, chard, and Chinese peas. Memories of summer days spent in sticky humidity under the blazing sun, grumbling under our breath so the old man wouldn?t hear, as we did our required two hours of tortured servitude. Our garden was not a glorified hobby ? it was our sustenance; along with the goats, chickens, and hogs that we raised and woke up at 6:00 a.m. to feed and milk every day before school, and the side of beef that we bought from the local slaughterhouse each year and stored in the giant deep freezer at my grandmother?s house down the hill.
Of course, at the time I didn?t appreciate how lucky I was to grow up drinking goats? milk instead of soda, eating freshly picked vegetables and eggs we had gathered ourselves and, as the oldest, my mom?s designated right-hand in the kitchen. I began to appreciate these early experiences when I had my own family and take great pride in preparing delicious meals that nourish our bodies and brings smiles to the faces of friends and family.
With all the diets out there you may be wondering what exactly is a heart healthy diet. A heart healthy diet is really the same as a cancer prevention diet or a basic healthy diet: one that is low in refined or processed sugar, low in saturated (animal) and trans fats, rich in nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, eat fish at least twice a week, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products.
But there?s another matter of vital concern that is often overlooked, for heart health and being healthy overall: the amount of sodium that the average American ingests. Sodium has come under increasing scrutiny in the past few years and has long been a silent culprit in high blood pressure and heart disease. Further scrutinizing our diet and eating unprocessed became imperative after my husband suffered his first heart attack in December of 2000, followed by bypass surgery and arrhythmia related problems. His twelve-year struggle with heart disease has meant virtually giving up some of his favorite foods ? like cheese and charcuterie! ? and? developing laser-sharp focus on the sodium content in food.
Healthy food doesn?t have to be boring?or bland. And, there?s more ways to amp up flavors besides adding salt. One way to shake the salt habit is to cut back on the amount of table salt, however, most of the salt we consume is from restaurant and processed foods ?? bread has lots of salt, as do cereal and cakes, cheese and meat, and, of course, snack foods. Many of us have been conditioned with a craving for salt from the foods we ate as children and it takes time for your taste buds to grow accustomed to the inherent flavor of foods without the pop that salt adds. Besides eliminating processed foods as much as possible, I started cooking without added salt years ago and everyone (mostly me) could sprinkle sea salt to their own taste at the table.
Using herbs, spices, and other flavorings is a great way to season food and lower your dependence on the salt shaker. Here are my Top 10 ways to add flavor and enhance the taste and complexity of food, along with popular recipes from the archives that you might like to try.
1. Onions and Garlic
Raw or cooked they complement nearly any savory dish. I especially like caramelized onions for a deeper, umami flavor in stews, soups, any braised or roasted dish, tomato based pasta sauces, burgers (beef, veggie, or turkey), meatloaf, pizza (allowing you to cut down on cheese). The umami flavor of caramelized onions work well in vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. Experiment with omitting the butter and using only sesame, avocado, olive, and grape seed oil to cook them. Since the holidays are coming up, I wanted to feature my healthy take on Green Bean casserole ? that ubiquitous holiday favorite since the 50?s:
2. Herbs and Spices
If your spice rack consists of Italian seasoning and basil, it?s time to expand your horizons ? reinvent the dishes you?ve been making for years and bust a move with a few new ones! Pick up some fresh rosemary, thyme, chives, or basil at the market or stock up on dried herbs and ground spices such as: Herbs de Provence, cumin, coriander, cayenne, lemon pepper, no-salt chili seasonings and spice mixtures for every cuisine at stores like? Savory Spice Shop where I satisfy my urge for Moroccan with Ras el Hanout and Za?atar.
3. Lemon Juice
Not just for water or cocktails or as a salad dressing substitute for dieters, lemon juice adds a bright taste that is capable of replacing salt ?- the #1 culprit of bloat and water retention besides being a major contributor to high blood pressure ? in a lot of foods. Oftentimes when a dish tastes flat, it needs a little acid ? not salt. Add a squeeze of lemon to salads, steamed or saut?ed veggies, grilled fish or chicken, sauces, and soups. Don?t limit yourself to lemon juice either ? lime, orange, tangerine, and grapefruit juices are also equal contenders depending on the dish ? lime is a staple in Mexican, Central American, South American, and Asian cuisines, orange and tangerine are fabulous foils for pork and game, and experiment with grapefruit juice in place of lemon (unless you?re on a statin drug).
4. Citrus and Citrus Zest
This includes lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit and tangerine: take that marinade up a notch and include the zest of the fruit, not just the juice. Citrus is the perfect complement to fish and seafood and citrus zest is also great in baked goods where the liquid may change the delicate composition of the recipe.
5. Vinegar
As I said previously, if a dish tastes ?flat? add a dash of acid. It?s the supporting character behind many a stellar sauce, salad dressing, marinade, salsa, or chutney. Vinegars are far more versatile than you (or I) ever suspected. If cost per ounce were calculated they are the ultimate flavor enhancer ? stock up on white balsamic, apple cider, balsamic, rice, red wine, white wine, and champagne vinegars. I?ve used balsamic vinegar with mushrooms in recipes as a substitute for high-sodium soy sauce (don?t let the low-sodium label fool you).

6. Infused Oils
A wonderful replacement for butter, salted butter, and soy sauce or to add another layer of flavor beyond extra virgin olive oil. I frequently use truffle oil, blood orange oil, Meyer lemon oil, chili oil, garlic-infused oil, and oils infused with Asian flavors which have far less sodium than soy sauce.
7. Beer and Wine
Use beer and wine (and even coffee) to add flavor to stews, soups, chili, pasta sauces, and braised dishes on their own or instead of broth. Avoid all canned soups ? they are loaded with sodium. Canned or boxed broth or soup base, unless you make your own at home, is high in sodium ? even the low-sodium varieties can be too high for someone on a restricted sodium diet, unless one serving, which is usually considered 1/2 cup (read labels), is all you?re going to consume.
8. Salsa and Chutney
Whether traditional tomato-based, sweet seasonal fruit, or a combination of the two, they are a colorful, fresh flavored accompaniment to grilled meats, fish, omelets, a wide-range of appetizers, cheese plates, chips and crudit?s. Homemade salsa and chutney are actually quite easy to make, you?ll wonder why you?ve never bothered.
?9. Chiles and Peppers
Low sodium fare does not have to taste bland, if you crave highly seasoned food there?s no better way to get that punch than with chiles and peppers, whether you like them mild or packing some heat, add them freely.
10. Mushrooms
Add a meaty, satisfying flavor to vegetarian and vegan dishes and can provide that elusive umami taste to Asian-inspired dishes without sodium-loaded soy sauce by using a mixture of caramelized onions and mushrooms saut?ed in a sesame oil/vegetable oil combination with a dash of balsamic vinegar. You can eliminate soy sauce, oyster sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and other high-sodium condiments with natural umami flavors.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook on Monday replaced the heads of its software and retail units in the company's biggest executive shake-up in a decade following embarrassing problems with its new mapping program and unpopular store-related decisions.
Software chief Scott Forstall, who oversaw the launch of the flawed mapping software and much criticized Siri voice-enabled assistant, will leave Apple next year.
Forstall, seen as a polarizing figure inside Apple, had been billed as one of the future candidates to take the top job at Apple. He was the executive behind the panned Apple Maps app that the company announced with much fanfare in summer.
Apple said in a statement that retail chief John Browett "is leaving," without elaborating; that a search for his replacement is underway; and the retail team would report directly to Cook. Browett had riled up the retail store staff when he reduced the number of employees in his unit.
The departures come a little more than a year into Cook's tenure as chief executive. Cook replaced the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, considered one of the best executives of all times by many analysts and investors.
"These changes show that Tim Cook is stamping his authority on the business," Ben Wood, analyst with CCS Insight, said. "Perhaps disappointed with the Maps issues, Forstall became the scapegoat."
Apple upended the tech industry with the release of its iPhone smartphone in 2007. But the company is facing increasing competition from search giant Google, whose Android has become the world's most popular mobile software, as well as from Amazon.com Inc, Microsoft and Samsung.
"Competition is moving much faster to be more Apple-like," said Tim Bajarin, president of technology research and consulting firm Creative Strategies. "They're finding they need to streamline the management team in order to get things going faster."
Apple's launch of its own mapping service in September, when it began selling the iPhone 5 and rolled out its updated iOS 6 software, led to widespread user complaints, particularly since it replaced the popular Google Inc Maps.
Apple's Siri personal assistant software also came under a lot of criticism, including for not providing information on business location, when it was launched last year.
Both the services were introduced with much fanfare by Forstall, who had supervised their development as senior vice president of iOS software.
The executive changes hand over substantially more responsibility to Eddy Cue, the head of Internet Software and Services who helped create the iTunes music store and App Store. The 23-year Apple veteran already is in charge of Cloud services and will take on Apple Maps and Siri. Craig Federighi will oversee Apple's mobile iOS software as well as its OS X Mac software, Apple said.
Putting the mobile and personal computer software teams under the same manager could improve operations within the company, particularly as the capabilities and features of smartphones and PCs increasingly converge, said analysts.
"If you have two different heads, you have two different fiefdoms," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis.
Another executive who will get extra responsibility under the shake-up is Jonathan Ive, Apple's head of industrial design, who has played a key role in Apple's success by imbuing its gadgets with a distinct look and feel.
That magic touch could help reinvigorate the look of Apple's software, which has been criticized by some technology observers, Gillis said.
RETAIL SWITCH
Shares of Apple, the world's largest publicly traded company by market value, have declined 14 percent in the past month since reaching a 52-week high of $705.07 in September.
Browett, former CEO of British electronics retailer Dixons, took over as senior vice president of Apple's retail stores earlier this year, replacing Ron Johnson, who went on to become the CEO of JCPenney.
"I think ultimately they probably discovered that his experience with Dixons didn't translate that well to the Apple stores and he just probably wasn't the right fit," Bajarin of Creative Strategies said.
Apple, which described Monday's moves as a way to increase "collaboration" across its hardware, software and services business, said Forstall will serve as an advisor to Cook until his departure.
Last week Apple delivered a second straight quarter of disappointing financial results, and iPad sales fell short of Wall Street's targets, marring its record of consistently blowing past investors' expectations.
